Isn't it illegal to exclude females from a group?
Not at all. It's perfectly legal to exclude men and biological males from groups as well. Case in point, USA Powerlifting has excluded trans women from competing in women's competitions, because trans women have gone through male puberty and thus have higher bone density, bigger joints and increased muscle mass than biological women. And those things don't go away, even after transitioning.

Yeah, they do go away, especially the muscle mass. Most of that stuff is maintained by testosterone. Trans women are at an increased risk of osteoporosis. These sports and fitness groups aren't always well-informed about the subject. A trans woman on hormone therapy is not a "biological male" any longer. My lazy fat butt is now stronger with more endurance than a trans woman friend of mine who was a weightlifter and boxer, and was pretty built, due to our respective hormone therapies.
