Generally, you either grin and bear it for the sake of family unity or you make a break with your family for the sake of self preservation.

I can't comment on what my near family is, as im not 100% sure as we never talk about it, I think the majority are atheists and maybe a few of them are open for there being something more. I wouldn't call it Christianity, because I know for a fact that none of them have ever read or most likely even opened the bible, so if they do believe in it, its most likely just based on what they have heard from churches and common knowledge. However I occasionally share my view on God and the bible with them and in cases we disagree, it offend end in a heated debate :D Which is not uncommon especially with my dad as we pretty much have difference views on everything, where you can have an opinion, same goes with my mother, which shares mainly my views and completely disagree with my dad's as well. But we get along fine and have always done and enjoy debating/discussing with them as I think its important to share views regardless of what they are, its the only way to move people and get to know them, even if they are your parents.

I think a lot of people are to scared to share their views and defend them today, but also in general people are very bad at discussing things. Not talking written form, which is slightly better than if you talk with them in person. But at least in my experience, when people talk, they rarely listen to each other and its far easier for people to get defensive and upset, because its not uncommon that people will interrupt each other etc.

Anyway in general I think one should share ones opinions, if they are important to you and also be willing to defend them if needed.

It depends. Do you still live with your family? Would you be kicked out for being an atheist? Best to keep quiet until you can support yourself. There is no moral obligation to spread atheism. At least not if it puts you in any sort of trouble.

I don't discuss religion. As long as they are happy with their belief, it's not my job to try and fix them. If they ask, I'm honest, but I don't go out of my way to push my views onto them.

A lot depends on your age. If you are a child, then you should respect tyour parants views as long as you live there. If you are an adult ehen you have the right to your own beliefs.

So if one is a child, one is not permitted to have one's own views.

I did it wrong. :(

If you're an atheist in Christian family, you might be fine, but you might have to stay in the closet out of fear of what would happen if they found out. Depends.

If you're a Christian in an atheist family, you'll probably find that everyone else will start eating while you're saying grace, and you probably won't have much competition for the bathroom when you're getting ready for church on Sunday morning.

Why would you need to do anything? Most families are sane enough to realise that family members think for themselves and need to find their own way in the world.

I did not say you could not have views but a child must respect his parents. A child might have the view that he wants candy six times a day but when the parents says "no" the child must obey and eat his veggies.

Are you implying that atheism requires one to eat immediately when food is served? Or that atheists are just inconsiderate of others?

I grew up as an atheist in a conservative Catholic family.
I just kept my mouth shut about things that aren't my business.

It's a skill that has served me well as an adult.

If we're talking about religious/non-religious views, that's a pretty poor analogy.

Let's try this one...If a boy feels more comfortable as a girl, he shouldn't be free to feel as such because the parents want him to be a boy?
