School uniforms vs fashion statements

They can choose what they wear outside of school. And really that's actually in their parents' hands, since they're the ones who approve of and purchase their clothing.

Of course bullies should still be dealt with. No one suggested otherwise and it isn't an either/or situation. Besides, the victims often don't have choice other than what their parents can afford, anyway.
I bristle at the idea that government can force kids to dress
in a manner to give the appearance of financial equality.

Lol what?
Government doesn’t do anything. The school sets the policy. And uniforms have more to do with security purposes than giving any appearance of financial equality. Shops just saw a market and pounced.

School uniforms are fine but the bill should be picked up by the state or at least cover it for poor families, and girls shouldn't have to wear skirts or blouses if they don't want to.
Thank you! I hated wearing skirts in high school. There was a rule (which only one or two teachers actually bothered to enforce) which said formal uniform on Monday’s and every other day you could wear the sports uniform only if you had PE or sport that day. I had a business teacher who was unusually strict about uniforms. So I used to print out fake timetables to prove I had PE on the days I had her lol

I'm a great believer in school uniforms;

Pros:
They are a leveller - all kids the same
They are an identifier
They stop the kids urge to wear the trendiest (and usually most expensive) fashion trends
Parents don't have the 'what am I wearing?' early morning arguments.

Cons
They can be awful (We even had a cap!!!)
There is an element of losing ones 'individuality' but that doesn't seem to bother the armed services, etc,.
I went to a boy's boarding school throughout high school. It was run by Quakers (and I say that with admiration, believe me!). We had no uniform, but we had a simple dress rule for the school day -- shirt with a collar, pants with a crease, shoes with a shine. And for dinner (Monday - Friday evening, Sunday Noon), jacket and tie.

So a bit of freedom of choice within limits, and yes...all kids the same. It's very workable.

Especially those who like to say they are non conformist. As far as I can tell, that group, hipsters, emo, or whatever group, they all look alike.
Omg I just had flashbacks to my cringe emo teen phase. Lmao! And the “I must be emo” song parodying the whole thing. Ahh high school

I never did the emo thing, but I found that song hilarious. "you'd be nonconforming too if you looked just like me."

I was more punk honestly, but the teen angst in me made me like the various “life is sad” songs lol
