Sri Lanka Easter bombings from a Muslims perspective

They wore my label, but I don't wear theirs!!

“Wake up angel, wake up” he was thinking because he couldn’t speak. But she was silent. Her eyes were closed. She wasn’t breathing. An angel went away because of the evil that came in the guise of a martyr.

Maybe two years ago a few men probably thought of themselves as martyrs, and got in touch with another group somewhere who was looking for people to support their fanatical cause, and found them. Secretly they communicated and grew the indoctrination like a beard that takes time to grow. Don’t weed, don’t shave, let it grow and it grew.

The country is Sri Lanka. One of the most versatile countries with many ethnicities, forced or out of choice. We had a 30-year war that ended as we perceive in the year 2009 but of course those who kept the hatred continued on hiding it in Sri Lanka, but opening up around the world. We have been seeing it on a daily basis everywhere. A hatred not because of natural born racism but a hatred mongered by invaders who made us think this is natural born. When you repeat the same lie a hundred times it becomes the truth. I would say that if you repeat everywhere, everyday it becomes more than truth. It becomes reality. It becomes religion. It becomes faith.

The king Pandukabhaya in his time had “Yona Sabhaa waatthu”, of course for the Greeks and they were called Yona I was told by a history teacher and master’s degree holder in history, wife of my best friend who was a catholic. Sri Lanka was a country that had global interaction and a country that had a lot of invasions and war. But we prevailed. And we will prevail. But imagine my plight when another human being carrying the label of religion that I carry hurt my friend or his family who did more for me than one could calculate!

A man’s child was killed yesterday. A mother, a sister, a father, a grandfather, godparents, god children, family, friends, angels and saints were killed yesterday. There was no discrimination while with a weapon that spreads its horror wide it is impossible to discriminate. Oh but there was discrimination. People targeted Christians. So they say that it was done as a retaliation for the so called killings of Muslims in New Zealand. But you see my friend, Muslims were killed randomly inside a mosque some time ago by another group of people in my country, but you didn’t care. Why do you kill my people in my country for a thing that happened in another country now? Don’t you see you are hypocrites?

The NTJ, SLTJ and ACJU

Back in 2015, the secretary of the SLTJ (Sri Lanka Thowheed Jamaath) movement spoke openly against the majority Muslims and it sounded a bit harsh. Their main argument was similar to the reformation era Martin Luthers protest against the church (Against some Muslims practicing supplication and belief to saints). He also spoke of a letter received by the SLTJ from the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama (ACJU - the largest registered Islamic body in Sri Lanka founded in 1924) suggesting that the visit of P Jainulabdeen, the leader of the TNTJ (Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath in India) to Sri Lanka should be avoided because there is a bit of tension in the country and this visit might be an aggravation. It seems like a mild request but the SLTJ secretary Abdur Razik rejected the request like a fly on a knee. Thus it is evident that the representation of the majority were telling the SLTJ to subdue their activities and were against them. Which shows clearly the majority of Sri Lanka was also against the TNTJ who just yesterday issued a request from everyone to not associate them with this new group NTJ (National Thowheedh Jamaath alleged with the Easter massacre in Sri Lanka) which clearly shows Sri Lankan Muslims will be, and is completely and utterly against the NTJ.

Most Sri Lankans heard about this so called NTJ only after the terrorist attacks that took place on the 21st. But some Muslims did know about them and have been protesting against them for a number of years. They held billboards, banners and protested by the sides of roads against the NTJ along with pictures of the main brain, propagator of this Terrorist Attack, called them out for inciting hatred and adherence for probable terrorist activities. Of course, they were not noticed because like one who has escaped a harsh desert to a tropical haven we were drunk with the freedom and could not believe what we escaped from could overtake us again. How did we end up letting a serpent crawl under our sheet while our pets and siblings all screamed “Snake! Snake!”?

The kiss of death

A young man was born with a silver spoon and got education most cannot afford. He studied in England, finished his degree and flew to Australia to pursue post graduate studies. An interview with his sister reveals that he was a normal young man with a good sense of humour, even after he came back from England. She says that his period in Australia changed him into a loner with extreme religious ideas. How did this man lose his sanity?

It is due to top of mind awareness created by frequent repetition of phrases that pushes people to so easily associate an action with a religion. But if one analyses deep, the reasons are mostly secular. Blaming an act like this on a religion, do you believe if you eradicate that particular religion from the planet these actions will end? There are very few people who have made that research and written about it. Out of that few, it is only a select few who make rational decisions based on the findings of their research and state facts without bias. If you think clearly, take the past century and imagine a world without Islam. No Muslims in this universe. Do you think violence, wars, terrorism and suffering would be much lower? Now you as a reader must be all kinds of images you saw on TV, the internet, social media, etc. and would shake your head and smirk in denial. But think of all the images you did not see yet.

Religion

A man named Robert A. Pape, PhD and founder of Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism, a very well-known political scientist from the United States of America compiled a database of all suicide attacks from 1980 to 2003 with an extensive research of news in all available media outlets. His book was called Dying to Win, The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism and in the introduction section he says

“The data show that there is little connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, or any one of the world’s religions. In fact, the leading instigators of suicide attacks are the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a Marxist-Leninist group whose members are from Hindu families but who are adamantly opposed to religion. This group committed 76 of the 315 incidents, more suicide attacks than Hamas. Rather, what nearly all suicide terrorist attacks have in common is a specific secular and strategic goal: to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territory that the terrorists consider to be their homeland. Religion is rarely the root cause, although it is often used as a tool by terrorist organisations in recruiting and in other efforts in service of the broader strategic objective. Three general patterns in the data support my conclusions. First, nearly all suicide terrorist attacks occur as part of organized campaigns, not as isolated or random incidents. Of the 315 separate attacks in the period I studied, 301 could have their roots traced to large, coherent political or military campaigns.”

Robert Pape goes to explain various levels of terrorism while suicide terrorism is the most extreme. He gives an example “One LTTE suicide attacker was motivated by the thought that the Sinhalese Buddhists would destroy the Hindu temples near her village, even though she had never visited them.”

He says “Two main explanations have been offered thus far. The first argues that local competition between the LTTE and other Tamil guerrilla groups encouraged the LTTE to use the extreme tactic of suicide to distinguish itself from its rivals. The second explanation stresses the “cult-like” behaviour of the group in which the Tamil Tigers separate their fighters from the general population and brainwash recruits to follow the leader’s orders without conscious choice.”

Follow the leader’s orders without conscious choice. Sounds like a sane explanation of the insanity.

Religion is used as a language to achieve certain goals a state or a group has as foundation to further their cause. Their root 'cause' is made of secular goals but their communication takes the language of religion. Even secularism has been used in the past as the language that leaderships have used for their cause. Take Joseph Stalin for example. He was a secular atheist with a secular state and he butchered Christians, Christian pastors and people who had a Bible at home during his reign. He was instrumental in the deaths over 15 million people and is deemed only second to Mao Zedong in the number of human deaths caused by them and their regime. And it may come as a surprise to many when they learn Joseph Stalin persecuted homosexuals by jailing them up to five years and that’s in the 20th century while the so called Muslim khalifate, the Ottoman Empire gave them full rights way back in 1858. The scale of totalitarianism tips this way and that way but what we remember top of mind is what we see every day on TV.

Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod compiled the comprehensive book on wars in history called “Encyclopedia of Wars”, a great read, clearly shows that only 7% of all wars ever recorded in history were motivated by religion.

ISIS/DAESH and Shariah

Go on the internet and you will quickly find statements that speaks of this so called Shariah as an evil, totalitarian system that breeds terrorism. This is not the time or the platform to understand the Shariah, but how surprised would one be if he was told that the Shariah is unanimously against ISIS? Everyone would know that there is a sudden uprising against this ‘so called’ Shariah school in Sri Lanka and you would see this frequent statement “it should be banned and that it breeds terrorists”. These are completely false statements. To a normal Muslims these statements will sound strange and funny. There could be certain mosques and schools that teach fanatical views like gender inequality, inappropriate clothing, division, etc., and it’s true that they should be identified and monitored, especially since the terrorist attacks a few days ago, but there is no terrorism promoting activity here unless they are very secretive, hidden away and secluded. If they are in Colombo, Muslims don't have a clue. Which means it’s not regulated, which is if found and affirmed is a problem should be addressed immediately. There has to be a regulation in everything. If people don’t know what’s going on at a branch of a body, there is a serious lapse of control.

What is also evident is that the media has worked on us.

If you study the evolution of the Burqa you would know that there is a sudden increase of its adherence around the world which has many reasons. The more you oppose it, the more you will see it propping up. And obviously the likes of ISIS are using fanatical religious teachings to propagate and gather recruits, like what we saw in a very moderate and secular country like Sri Lanka. But what you must know is that it is the Muslims who are fighting ISIS, it is mostly Muslims who are getting killed by ISIS, and it’s the Muslim Ullama or theologians and scholars who vividly and clearly created a theological refutation to the leader of the group, ISIS. It is a unanimous, extensive response conceptualised and created by Islamic scholars worldwide and is a historic document never found in the history of the Muslims. This clearly shows that Muslims globally are against the ISIS movement and condemn them with a strong hand. Thus, making this a Muslim problem is wrong, and will only create further animosity, and further chaos. Every person reading this should try and read this document to know how far Muslims have gone to condemn terrorism of this group and directly addressed the self-proclaimed leader of a theocracy built in the sky. www.LetterToBaghdadi.com - LeOtPtener To Dr. Ibrahim Awwad Al-Badri, alias ‘Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi’, And to the fighters and followers of, the self-declared ‘Islamic StatE’ , 24th Dhul-Qi’da 1435 AH / 19th September 2014 CE.

Murder in the name of God

In a nutshell, the Islamic scripture directly tells you never to take an innocent life. So says the Quran in chapter 5 verse 32 - “It is because of this that we have decreed for the Children of Israel: “Anyone who kills a person who has not committed murder, or who has not committed corruption in the land; then it is as if he has killed all the people! And whoever spares a life, then it is as if he has given life to all the people. “

Now notice that this verse says as a blanket statement that a person who has not committed murder should not be killed or even as a government give a death sentence. But there is a phrase here that many people misunderstand that says “or who has not committed corruption in the land” which is open for interpretation. The Arabic phrase “Al Fasadhu Fil Ardh (الفساد في الأرض)”, or corruption in the land has a definition which a lot of people have ignored. This maybe the boring part for the reader, but this also maybe a piercer of faith to the fanatic. Read further.

So says the Quran in chapter 27, verses 48 to 50, - “And in the city were nine ruffians who were causing corruption in the land, and they were not reforming. They said: “Swear by God to one another that we will attack him and his family at night, …...

Notice that it says “Swear by God”. This is what the Quran is saying by the phrase “Spreading corruption in the land”. These are the people the verse 5:32 above is speaking about and they are very clearly explained.

So it should be evident, that their claim of murdering innocents shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, calls for Gods wrath on them, and the penalty is nothing but death. You murderer, your Quran is mandating a death sentence to you purely for murdering people using Gods name.

Bottomline: If you say Allah/God and kill an innocent human being, you are the scum of the earth according to the Quran. YOU!

Where did we fail?

If you have been in a team building workshop, you may have gone through an exercise where communication and communication skills are emphasised. If a team member says “I told you so”, and complains he wasn’t heard, there could be a situation where he or she is not heard, but it is your fault my friend for not communicating properly, for not making yourself heard, and maybe for not having the communication skills required. Bottomline is, you may be a good person but you are not a great team player which is a huge problem for the progress of an establishment and saying I wasn’t heard is not a good enough at all in a world any excuse is not a good excuse.

Well, it is true that Muslims in Sri Lanka shunned these fanatics. It is true that they protested in the streets. There are pictures of Muslims protesting against the NTJ, citing the leaders photograph, calling him a terrorist, and clearly stating that he is calling for murder. It could be stated that the government should have taken heed and taken action. If you did take action it is obvious that it was not enough. Saying that, that does not mean the Muslims of the country are not responsible. No matter how much effort you made it didn’t matter because innocent lives are gone so its not a good enough excuse. Someone would have known, a brother, a sister, a friend, a neighbour, a beggar or a business partner, someone would have had a clue. Your action against them should have taken a much more serious nature. No excuse.

As a country that had a separatist group in our midst with bombs going off killing innocent people all the time for 30 years we should have known better. Sri Lanka is known globally to be the country that actually won a war against a group that was deemed ‘terrorists’ and one of the most sophisticated at that. Yes, because we did end the war and relaxed happily basking in the freedom, we never expected this to happen. But it is because we had a thirty-year war, and it is because we ended it, that we have a wealth of expertise in counter terrorism the world does not have, thus, it is the responsibility of the experienced to not let this happen. Especially after repeated warnings.

Everyone here must have seen and read the letter titled “INFORMATION OF AN ALLEGED PLAN ATTACK”. The page number two clearly states that the NTJ leader Mohamed Cassim Mohamed Zaharan a.k.a Zaharan Hashim, along with his followers is planning a suicide attack on well known Catholic Churches and the Indian High Commission. It also says out of the perpetrators several of them have been identified and two of them, Zaharan Hashim and Shahid have fled to a Oluwil, Akkaraipaththu after vandalising a Buddhist statue in Mawanalla. Zaharans brother Rilwan was also named in the report as a propagator of the message and has been traveling in Akkaraipattu, mawanella, Kuliyapitiya, Putlam, Thihari areas and that he goes to a particular house between 11PM and 4AM. There are I.D numbers, more names, school and education backgrounds of other identified individuals are stipulated in the report.

  • The cover letter states this information was sent to - Inspector General of Police, by the Defense ministry.
  • Signed and sealed as sender - Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyalal Dissanayake
  • Forwarded - Director, Ministerial Security Division (MSD)
  • Essentially Addressed to - Director MSD

Having all the expertise, experience and capabilities, is this not enough to make the leaders of the country feel the danger? Every individual would know that the Easter celebrations are around the corner and this report claiming possible attack on churches should have so assuredly prompted everyone to take action. At least if one issued a warning to the public, and half the public didn’t go to church, a few lives may have been saved. That is if the government is unbelievably unable to provide security to the churches. But what do the Sri Lankan public hear from these leaders?

1. I told them but they didn’t take heed,

2. If I was there this wouldn’t happen,

3. I wasn’t told about it,

4. We didn’t have laws to arrest them, etc.

Take the analogy of an enterprise who made a loss of 250 million dollars within a day simply due to a negligence of a report that the management didn’t take seriously? Maybe the owning directors because its their money as well. But that kind of loss, in a few hours due to a lack of diligence though they were taunted for years, and warned 10 days ago, would definitely call for the sacking of a whole management team. Can one think of any enterprise who wouldn’t do that? The country is not a monarchy, so everyone is an employee. At least in a company the owner can escape because it’s his money. In our motherland all of these people held responsible are employees. They should all be identified and sacked. It is the people who voted them in, and it is the people who pay their salaries from their pockets to safeguard them. All these excuses are purely silly, irresponsible and against any moral standards. And the citizens of Sri Lanka must rise up, ask questions and remove them. This is where we went wrong and this was the problem.

Poli-ticks (Poli = "A lot of", Ticks = "Blood sucking creatures")

Politicians are using this as an opportunity for their personal betterment. Yesterday an Indian gentleman made a statement in prominent Indian TV media that it is the absence of the LTTE that led to this massacre. If the LTTE was there right now this would not have happened. Worldwide televangelists are making this an opportunity to blame it on the Muslims and Islam as a general blanket and promote themselves because it’s cottage industry now. All of these are drawing the attention away whats most important. Catching all the perpetrators, investigating exactly what went on, how did they get the explosives, who else are linked, who are linked to the linked, and more on their future plans. Muslims are a small community and close knit, but they are also dead against this group so information is out there. Thus, it’s up to the one country that has the expertise and experience to get to the bottom of things which is happening rapidly.

The outcome that should be suppressed is the hate speeches and hatred. Sri Lankan Muslims and Christians have never had animosity in history. What’s happening is that due to lack of depth in knowledge and top of mind awareness created by many media channels, Muslims are getting targeted. The internet has varying information and one must be careful what they believe. It could be completely misleading. After the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka someone uploaded an old video of a Buddhist gentleman who wore a Burqa to disguise himself in order to spy on his wife. This guy was captured by the police and someone took a video of him removing the Burqa. This video emerged after a year or more now and it was shared in media groups insinuating a Muslim man had disguised as a woman to carry out terrorist activities, the non-Muslims around the world picked the video up and circulated it to paint Muslims as dangerous terrorists while Muslims around the world picked it up to say that a Buddhist has worn a Burqa to bomb the churches, both twisting the true story to suit their own agenda. But lo and behold, people believe it and the perception lies in the eyes of the beholder. The individual interprets it from his preconceived notions. And some, not so surprisingly, intentionally twist content they find on the internet to propagate their hatred.

If one analyses the history of the world, there has been thousands and thousands of wars between people. If you read the Encyclopedia of Wars by Charles Phillip and Alan Axelrod you will see they have data filling over 1,400 pages as if the world was at war more than governance. Religion is a language that people use to identify themselves. Buddhism teaches us not to hate anyone because hatred cannot be mulled by hatred but the lack of hatred alone. That didn’t stop Buddhist monks in Myanmar from promoting violence. Jesus is quoted to have said to give the other cheek, but that didn’t stop the church from the inquisition as henry Charles lea, the American historian, civic reformer, and political activist remarked in his most famous book A History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages, “Christendom seemed to have grown delirious and Satan might well smile at the tribute to his power in the endless smoke of the holocaust which bore witness to the triumph of the Almighty.”

Together, lets mind our own business

The politics of other countries does affect us in some way or another, but it affects them more than us. Sri Lankans should take the higher path in comparison with the world because our country is different. We ended a war, while others are living it and growing it. It is a known fact if you make a visit to Syria, take a trip from Mayadhin to Damascus which is a 12 hour trip but easily achievable, ask all the people you meet privately about the war situation in their country. They will tell you that not a single force other than the Muslim army in Syria has ever shot one bullet against the ISIS. It is a fact. Our Sri Lankan forces are most renown to have ended the war, political reasonings and debates aside. So this country must fall into the trap other countries are in. This trap comes in the form cheap politics and making an industry out of hate mongering. Those of us who repeat generalisations are either bias or lack analysis. Maybe the Burqa does pose a threat to security because you cannot identify the individual behind it. The government has the right to decide what to do with that with the current situation. That does not mean Muslims support its ban as an entity, but in the 1980’s Sri Lanka banned the motorcycle helmet though it poses a hazard to the rider, turkey banned the Hijab in certain institutions until 2013, and it is a very well known Islamic injunction that you as a Muslims have to abide by the law of the country. The Burqa issue maybe a deviation from whats most important but if that discussion is taking our parliaments time, let them make a quick decision and move onto more important matters. LTTE does not mean Tamil or Hindu though it has the word Tamil in it, ISIS/ISIL/DAESH does not mean Muslim though it has the word Islam in it. There are over 200 full scale wars recorded in the last century, and if all Muslims, and all the Hindus vanished from earth, we would still have had those wars. One could argue that if all religions vanished from the face of the earth, and all the people were non-affiliated, or atheists, we would still have those wars. Conspiracy theories aside, a firm believer in Bin Laden and Al Qaeeda’s connection to the world trade centre bombings in the USA Robert A. Pape says in his book Dying to Win, the one book that has the most extensive research and data collection on suicide terrorism, “However, the presumed connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism is misleading and may be encouraging domestic and foreign policies likely to worsen America’s situation and to harm many Muslims needlessly”.

The first thing my old mother, one of the most devout Muslims I have ever known in my life said was "My God. This is as bad as the Tsunami". And all she had was empathy towards the families who lost a loved one from the time it happened to this very minute.

What should Muslims do?

1. End the denial if there is any. Accept that these guys are speaking the same language that a group like DAISH/ISIL is using. So accept and gulp down the fact that you may have suicide terrorists around you. Report them.

2. In order to avoid future atrocities of this nature, report who and what you suspect without fear of your own safety. Because if things escalate, you and family may be in danger by the way things are going.

3. All the perpetrators identified are Muslims. They have had ISIS flags. So they are your people. They grew up in your midst. So identify what went wrong.

4. Reexamine your philosophy of life and rather than secluding your family and children, include them in society. Advice your relatives to do the same.

5. Don’t wear clothes that may seem offensive. You cant help it. At this time, they will seem offensive, much more than what was building up through the years.

6. Be strong against all abuses, verbal or otherwise. Portray solidarity with the whole country, because the whole country is suffering.

What should Sri Lankans do

1. We should end the hate-mongering transfer of false news, generalisations and exploits. It can never do any favour to anything.

2. This is the time to unite, not divide. Division and isolation will create lack of knowledge, lack of cooperation and delayed response to opportunities.

3. Forget about the blame game and do what should be done next. The blame game closes up people and that is the worst thing that could happen at a time when people are supposed to open up.

Sri Lanka is an amazing country, with such incredibly pluralism and broadness of thought coexisting with emphatic communalist prejudice. Good on you for all efforts to stand for righteousness there, unqualified support!

As a side note, do you know if the Easter attacks impacted Chinese investment in Sri Lanka? I was amazed at seeing Port City being set up while I was over there a few months ago.

Port city was sealed before 2015 and then demurrage paid in 2016 due to the delays. Withdrawal clauses are not in favour of an easy sellout. Also the Chinese have very deep roots in SL, which means they are better predictors of what macroeconomics will be affected in time. So they will continue.

So you visited SL. I hope you had a good time. I'm sure you wouldn't have seen any repercussions of these bombings even though it was only 2 months. Haha. SL is like that. And this was a one off thing that ISIS used as a shocker for their agenda.

So hopefully things will look brighter. Thank you so much. And you should visit again.

I was there before the bombings, as it happens. I visited two of the churches which were later bombed. Thankyou! A very beautiful island. And travelling there is is easier when your girlfriend speaks Sinhala, too!
