"You can be a good Muslim and not wear a hijab"

Mainly claimed by people who have chosen it more convenient to not believe in the verses in the Qur'an, the hadiths or the Islamic scholars regarding hijab.

This is a misconception.

But if we pretend for a moment it isn't - or try to excuse ignorant Muslim women for not wearing a hijab because they sincerely believe it isn't required - the claim is still problematic.

How many Muslim women who don't wear a hijab pray five times a day?

How many of them wear modest clothing? I mean really modest, I don't mean putting on an actual shirt that reaches all the way down to the navel or pants that cover the skin of the legs, but leave nothing else to the imagination.

How many of them fast on Ramadan?

How many of them abstain from sex before marriage?

How many of them abstain from non-halal meat, alcohol or cigarettes?

How many of them avoid shirk?

How many of them read the Qur'an every day?

Not all Muslim women who wear a hijab abide by the rules either. But statistically the chances a Muslim who doesn't cover her head abides by the rules are much much lower than with those who do cover their head.

Hey @Wasp

My general approach is to take Muslims at their word. As I understand it, Muslims claim:

1 - The Quran is the perfect, timeless word of god
2 - Muhammad is the perfect role model.

Do I have this much correct? I'm often critical of Islam, and defenders of Islam have told me that I take the two points above too literally. Should I take those two points literally?

Thanks!

Yes, you can take those literally.

Frankly, I think that the #metoo feminists could take a lesson from Muslim woman in this regard.

If you don't want heterosexual men to view you as an object, wear a drapery sort of scarf. Wear a pair of painted on jeans and a plunging neckline, and they probably will see you as a product being merchandised.

Wow !! Stone those women without things on their head,, the thing identifies pure women.

You described high heels as improper.
Is that in the Qur'an?
Tom
Not directly, but there's no doubt shoes like that don't fit into the Islamic dress code for women. Besides, they're bad for you. Wearing something that is bad for you and brings nothing good with it is vanity to say the least.

You mean that a good Muslim woman can't be coiffed and beautifully dressed?
She can. But to change the average Abaya so that it shows the wasteline and the breasts better is done to attract sexual attention among other attention and is therefore a bad thing to do.

That sounds like a no.
Wishy washy, vague, and extremely subjective.
That's a big problem I have with religionists. They often make claims that have nothing to do with anything except their own personal opinion, attribute it to God, and pretend that they know something important about God and morality and such.

I agree, high heels are a dumb thing to put on your feet.

But in your post you said it had nothing to do with Qur'an, and now you're saying it doesn't fit Islamic dress code.
How much does Islam actually have to do with the Quran? Listening to Muslims, I get the idea that Islam hasn't much to do with the Qur'an. Rather like Christianity doesn't have much to do with Jesus.

They're both just labels for whatever a self described Muslim or Christian happens to believe.
Nothing to do with God.

Many Muslim women run successful businesses and many, many Muslim women are in grad school becoming engineers, doctors, architects etc They don't have to be dumpy to be pious.

Here:

Unless, of course, you don't think that Islam is based on Qur'an. But I don't think that's what you meant to say.
Tom
I don't understand. I said the high heels aren't mentioned in the Qur'an and that there is no doubt they don't fit with the dress code for women. But where do I say 'it' has nothing to do with the Qur'an?

To which dress code for women are you referring?
Quranic?
Islamic?
Your own personal?

You claimed high heels are improper, but you didn't say why.
Why?
Tom

yawn <ignore> yawn
Islamic of course.
Islamic is different from quranic.
I rather thought so, but usually people don't admit that.
The dress code.
Your own dress code. Obviously it isn't quranic or Islamic, you just said so.

Frankly, I also find high heels ridiculous and self destructive. They're mainly about attracting the attention of heterosexual men. Then, when they work as intended, women get all upset because a dude responds but it's not the one they wanted.

What's with that? Why do chicks package the goods, then complain when men try to buy the goods?
