Question for Christians

Rational Agnostic

If the only thing that ultimately matters is the earth and a guy who lived on it 2000 years ago, why does the universe have over 100,000,000,000 galaxies, each of which contain over 100,000,000,000 stars, and planets? The Bible says that God made the stars to give light to the earth (Genesis 1:14-15). Yet the entire night sky that can be seen, even away from city lights is less than 1% of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is much less than 0.0000000001% of the known universe. Perhaps, to paraphrase Carl Sagan, the manmade Christian god is too small for this universe.

How is there being 100,000,000,000 galaxies relevant to Christianity or to us in general for that matter? I don't think we should be expecting any visitors for anytime soon.

That is one of a million questions that cannot be answered.
We are supposed to be concerned about ONE question,
because it relates to whether this "guy" is who He says He
is, and what does that say about ourselves.

I might add that this "guy" spoke of our need to be humble. In effect, to see
ourselves as we really are - essentially nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Hardly... I think it is just you that has made God too small.

What if we are the start of something so big, that we cannot fully contemplate it? If we are the beginning, who can imagine the end? Carl Sagan underestimates the God of the Bible, who is a thoughtful Creator, not a whimsical magician.....though he may be right about "the manmade Christian god"....I do not see the two as even resembling one another.

The sky's the limit...literally IMO.

This kind of argument makes little sense, although I do understand the thought process behind it.

Why the universe is set up one way and not another is not an article of faith. It is not something God revealed to the Church because it is irrelevant. What is relevant as far as the faith is concerned is the means by which man can achieve eternal happiness with God. This is what Christ incarnated to open to us. He did not come to explain Zeta Reticuli or the Pleiades.

I have been thinking that for a long time. The Bible does mention the first fruits of a New Creation

I think the Mormons actually believe he came from the Pleiades

When God told the first humans to "fill the earth and subdue it"...he didn't say to 'overfill' it....so logically, when the earth is filled to capacity, God has two choices, since death is to be eliminated as "the last enemy"....he can either prevent further procreation or send other "Adam's and Eve's" to build new colonies on other worlds...? There are probably other possibilities but I can't think of any. :p

Once all of the "bugs" regarding the abuse of free will have been sorted out here, there is nothing to prevent God from doing whatever he wants with his own creation. Its a vast universe.

If we are the beginning of human existence and God placed us here with his qualities and moral sensibilities to care for the planet and its inhabitants as he would....what is to stop him eventually populating the whole universe......he has forever to do it, and infinite wisdom and power to accomplish it.

Isn't speculating fun...? :D

The only "bugs" in God's creation are those with six or eight legs.

Well you obviously mis read what the Bible say.
It tells you that on the 4th day God made two great lights to shine on the Earth to be signs of time Years and seasons.
it says

Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights {note not a Sun and Moon but lights} in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
Gen 1:15 And let them be for lights (Again, Lights in the atmosphere, not a sun and moon in the atmosphere) in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
Gen 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
Gen 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
The verse that made you to misunderstand is verse 16.
Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

This is unfortunately a mis translation and the word "He made" isnot in the script.
It should read:
Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night the stars also.
Therefore, the Bible say that God made the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night with the stars.

What you misunderstood is the fact that the Bible gives a description that the Sun, for the first time since its existance, started to shine to its fullest as it progressed in accretion and eventually fell in upon its own mass, kicking off nuclear fission.this description is therefore one of:
For the first time the sun shined on the Earth, reflecting its light from the moon, and all the planets that did not reflect any light on the Earth before this event.

Now, it is also a scientific fact that the nebular theory is explaining, and which was noted by Emmanuel Kant in 1755.
Today science is actually using Genesis 1 as the model for the origins of the Solar system
Look at what I did in taking a picture from a scientific publication illustrated by an artist, and when I added the words of Genesis to the picture, One can see where science got their explanation from.
You only ask this question because these facts are hidden by Atheists in the scientific world.
here it is:

There is that problem of sin....it is associated with the abuse of free will. (Romans 5:12) Sin is the biggest "bug" in God's creation, introduced by humans who thought they knew better than their Creator.

So where does the NT, claim Jesus was here for the whole universe?

Why do you believe that? Why do you have so much faith to the person who claims that?
