If there was a civil war in the United States, and the global economy collapsed, and world hunger in an overpopulated world resulted... Would cannibalism occur?

...What is the history of cannibalism, especially on remote islands such as Somoa? What are the conditions necessary, required for cannibalism to occur?

There are some things I will choose death over. One of them is extreme, extreme physical suffering over months and months. Another is cannibalism. Another is fighting a war I don't believe in.

I don't eat other animals. I just abuse plant life. Many parts of certain trees are edible. :D

The conditions? What about whispering some magic words in latin on a wafer, while dressed in a funny way and satisfying the fundamental prerequisite of having testicles?

I know that is still practiced today among some religions. I believe they are called Catholics, or something. They claim to literally eat the body of a human God, or something like that.

I don’t think, unfortunately, you need to go to remote islands to find them.

I think that once you were starving enough and desperate enough, you would resort to cannibalism but I think that you would try other measures first if possible. Uguayan Air Force Flight 571 was a chartered flight that crashed on a glacier in the remote Andes in 1972. Among the 45 people on board, 28 survived the crash. Facing starvation and death, the survivors reluctantly resorted to cannibalism. After 72 days on the glacier, 16 people were rescued. They were on a glacier so they had no plants or animals to eat. So, I think it is a matter of what the circumstances are. I would believe that few people would simply give up and starve to death. Survival instinct is strong. Although, if they became weak enough, they might not make any further attempt to eat.

Hell, I wouldn't wait that long. Pass the BBQ sauce and fire up the grill (I'd start with those meaty calves first, btw).

Yes, almost certainly.

I don't know about Samoa but I know there are a few tribes dotted around that still practice cannibalism (for reasons other than starvation, I'll cover that in a moment) in one form or another. My understanding is that it's very often a funeral practice. Sometimes this is done by literally eating the flesh of the deceased, other times the ashes from a cremation are mixed into food/drink. It has some pretty severe health risks associated. I believe this practice died out in Papua New Guinea as a result of people contracting kuru.

What are the conditions necessary, required for cannibalism to occur?

It varies. I mentioned cultural reasons above but it also happens when people face starvation. The desire to eat is instinctive and it's not always easy to ignore that.

Doesn't extreme starvation cause insanity and thus cannibalism?

According to Jesus and Christendom, you have to literally eat his body and drink his blood to be saved. John 6:48-58. Christians symbolically do this every time they take communion/Eucharist. Psalm 16:4. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips".

I think a zombie apocalypse might be more of a realistic possibility than we may have thought, especially in low income neighborhoods, and ghettos.

Catholics don't actually believe it's "symbolic" though. But anyways, this thread ain't about religion... It's about survival, and killing your neighbor.

Having been a Catholic myself when I was a kid, even though I took Holy communion I only knew that I was eating a wafer (the only thing I looked forward to in mass). I don't see how they know it is a wafer and believe it is transformed into the literal body at the same time. My dad who is catholic says it isn't literal but a reminder, so I dunno if average Catholics believe that idea. Yet the Catholic Church definitely says it literally becomes the Body of Christ. Weird.

I wonder if there are vegetarian catholics and how they manage the obvious cognitive dissonance.
