"Unaware of First Amendment, 67% of GOP Say Flag Burners Should Lose Citizenship"

"67% of Republicans say that people who burn the U.S. flag should be stripped of their citizenship, according to a new survey from YouGov.

The people who are obsessed with the Second Amendment have no clue there’s one that comes before it.

Sadly, 24% of Democrats said the same thing,* but at least a majority of them (64%) understand that you don’t have to love speech in order to respect freedom of it. But still! A whole bunch of Americans think freedom of speech — even speech that is symbolic and not meant to harm other people — ought to have its limits.

The survey comes weeks after Donald Trump called for a ban on flag burning, contrary to American law and Supreme Court precedent.

As I said at the time, we should be far more disturbed by a president who dry humps the American flag while his administration locks kids in cages than a citizen who destroys the flag in the hopes of drawing attention to a particular problem.

IOW, 180% more Republicans than Democrats are ignorant of the First Amendment, and say " Flag Burners Should Lose Citizenship."

Surprising? Of course not.

As a Veteran of the Vietnam War Era, I once tried to Murder a college kid who was burning the flag, but the police pulled me off. My feelings have not changed despite Trump.

Most of those who served in Vietnam were drafted, and to insult their service....

As a non American person i do not understand why Americans are so attached to the flag, in my eyes the Norwegian flag (i am norwegian) is just a pease of cloth that humans have given to the government of a country to "symbolise" where we come from. The flag does not make us more or less human being.

I dont say we should burn flags, but if someone did burn the Norwegian flag i would not use energy on them at all.
Why do Americans get so angry ?

I think it may have to do with a lack of self esteem. Some people try to foster self esteem by identifying with what they perceive to be images of strength and vigor, a common perception of what the American flag represents. And to marginalize that image in anyway marginalizes them. Then again, some are just flakes who unthinkingly go along with anything they're told.

I think it's pretty silly to kick them out of the country for burning flags, but fine them and jail them sure -- I don't like people burning things, in general, unless they're food items in a barbecue. :D

But, if they really hate America and it's not just some "burning of flags" I think they can feel free to leave at any time. If what America is/was disturbs you to such a degree there are about 200 other countries you can go live in, maybe they're more agreeable to you.

That's why I always thought it was amusing for socialists to try to invade the US politics -- man, there is no reason to waste your time to get people to do a complete 180, just move to the extremely liberal/communist country of your choice. It's never really going to be popular here...

The right screams that they are being denied their free speech right to advocate hate and be allowed to lie BY PRIVATE COMPANIES but wants to deny that right to those they disagree with. And they want private businesses to be able to do anything but stop their hate speech.

No need to become a communist just because we do not support the right-wing extremists ;)

The ironic thing is that the favorite of conservatives was the conservative Justice Anton Scalia who voted for the right to burn the flag in protest.

How does burning a flag insult their service? Do you think they were fighting for the flag?

Americans are encouraged to engage in idolatry, from birth. And are discouraged in every way from 'peeking behind the curtain' of real wealth and power. So they idolize the flag and willfully ignore the criminality it enwraps.

Another way is to understand the issue that in theory your service defended the very right to protect that freedom to burn the flag. It was these bloody protests that ended the draft. For all the service in a war that never should have been, you and those you served with, were never officially welcomed home and given the honor so much deserved. For that, SHAME ON US.

People are more protective of symbols than of the principles symbolized. Dissent has always been criminalized by freedom-hating traditionalists.

There are really almost no "right wing extremists" in the USA, even where you think there are. I used to interview metal bands and some of the bands were involved in NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) they had some racist lyrics, but they weren't chasing black people down or making trouble -- mostly they were doing beers and bbq's on the weekend. I never really understood the logic to white power folks/music, but also realize there is an image/scene with most things -- there are very few actual bad actors. One of the guys I spoke with ten years later is married with kids and his wife is a Muslim -- left that music scene, works in a factory, and doesn't cause any trouble. In fact, I'm only aware of one person in that local scene that DID get in trouble -- but out of hundreds, there is always one whack guy.

It's pretty funny though, sometimes they would attend white power rallies and the only violence that ever happened was when anti-fascists would start punching them. Of course, then they'd beat the **** out of the anti-fascists and get blamed for "starting the trouble". Before that, the white power guys were just doing beers, bbq, and talking with the people whom showed up. Things aren't always what they seem. But, anyway, I still think racism is retarded --- just letting you know how the media misinforms things. In most cases, the average white power guy isn't anything to worry about.
