I remember reading about some of those projects, yes they were a wee bit before my time, but I loved history of technology, and so was aware of them.
Plus, I devoured Robert Heinlein's early books, many of which featured atomic powered rockets. Most notable, and detail driven, was Rocket Ship Galileo. But The Rolling Stones also featured atomic rockets, it was simply less central to the story.
I have often lamented, that thorium was not experimented with more-- I well understand the reasoning back in the Cold War days-- uranium based plants, had a lovely and desirable by-product: weaponizing uranium, whereas thorium did not.
Perhaps the indomitable Russians, will come up with a solution. Although, to be sure, it'll involve the loss of life as is their habit; they do seem more caviler about such things than we (Westerners) do.

Nuclear powered cars... what exactly could be wrong with that idea, just imagine some teenagers, drunk drivers or a police chase.

Nuclear powered cars are technologically possible and could also be done safely. But they can’t be both of those and also be economically feasible. More importantly, why bother when there are ready alternatives?
On the other hand, nuclear power generation should be revisited. Advances in dry micro-reactor design have been great.

It will require far greater care than prior efforts.

Heinlein's books that were referred to as his "juvenile works" were some of the first written science fiction I ever read. Space Cadet featured orbital platforms containing atomic bombs that were intended as deterrents.
I read everyone of those I could get my hands on then I graduated myself to some of his later, more complex works. I remember reading Stranger in a Strange Land when I was 10. In retrospect, I must give a lot of credit to my reading choices to a more open consideration of new ideas.
What about hover boards? When do we get those?
In an aside, they do not have engineers like the blonde with the Geiger counter in my dojo.
Excellent TV show...though.
I watched it in Italian...all episodes but #3
Episode 3 is really really unwatchable because of the people dying from the radiations.
I decided not to watch that episode.

The politicians will follow the will of the people. If we the people can overcome irrational fear and ignorance about nuclear power we can have clean and safe nuclear power.
Can you believe that in Enrico Fermi's homeland no nuclear power is produced?
Because Chernobyl traumatized Italians who shut down all plants...even if these had high safety standards.
The will of the people has no expertise in system design.
It blindly trusts leaders to do things on our behalf.
As we saw with their regulating nuclear power,
pooches were screwed.
Technology has improved, but implementation is subject
to leadership which dictates design parameters...shortcuts
& compromises.
So again, the question remains....
Do we trust the leaders we see to manage nuclear power?
Issues....
Safe reactor design.
Safe waste containment (not disposal).
Cost effectiveness.Cost effectiveness.
Were standards high?
How would this be known?
Compared to Chernobyl?
Very high
