In a previous, recent thread it was claimed that Jesus' message was to "be nice" and the rest was less significant.

What do you think? What are the important lessons taught by Jesus? Please share your opinion backed up with verses from scripture.

I respectfully request:

  • No preaching
  • No debating
  • Limit responses to Jesus' words as presented in scripture

Thank you,

What is most significant?
What is most memorable?
Are there common themes to the verses in red?

Note: I literally have no idea... Excluding sermon on the mount; I am completely ignorant of this subject matter.

As I understand it, it's everything Jesus said. There's no indication as to what is most significant or most memorable.

Please refer to the OP. If you have no opinion and nothing to offer to this thread, then that is noted.

Thank you,
First of all i want to say, this is a great thread @dybmh

So to my answer, In my understanding the core teaching by Jesus was Love
Matthew 5:38-48.
You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

And
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

First you asked, "What did Jesus say?" which is why I mentioned the red letter Bible I have.

Then you asked, "What are the important lessons taught by Jesus?" and from talking with Christians, they consider every lesson Jesus taught to be important.

As for "Please share your opinion backed up with verses from scripture." My answer above should cover it.: Every lesson, which would be far too many to cite.

"Love thy neighbor as thyself" pretty much sums it up.

I agree this is very special;

"44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous."

Well, He said the word repent more than He said the word love. For those who love their sin, repent is not a ¨nice¨ word to tell them.

Well no one actually knows what he actually said since he never bothered to write actually. So what we are left with isnt what he said but recollections? Although i am pretty sure some read the text as if it was a recording of what he said.....not that it is automatically wrong per litetate oral tradition, and folk music happen in the same way oddly enough.

I picked this passage as the most important aspect of understanding Prophecy;

Peter's Confession of Christ

(Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-20; John 6:66-71)

"13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven".

"Christ" being the name we have to come to understand. The name that is eternal aspect of Jesus.

In your [ opinion , knowledge , experience ] what is the lesson taught by this quote?
It would be a pretty long explanation as to why Christ had to die and why we must carry the yoke and the burden that he did if we are to truly live and then I would have to go into the absurdity, imperfectness and hopelessness that is life and how picking up that symbol of utter defeat leads to victory.

I present my opinion...

You asked for Bible verses. But as it stands, to give any wouldn't be as accurate as reading the NT books. It's like asking me to condense 150 pages to you.

Okay so, Jesus wasn't overly nice, he was a little nice. He called a lot of people out. He said some confusing things regarding prophecy that even his followers didn't understand. So good luck to us trying to decipher it. According to John 14:6, Jesus claimed to be truth.

So as it stands, you're mildly asking us to do the impossible vs. you going to a store which specializes in lesser-priced books, picking up a Bible, and skimming the pages.

Is this what Jesus intended when these words were spoken? Was Jesus speaking about his death? ( assuming the story is true, the quote is accurate, etc... )

note: i have no knowledge of this quote, its context, or the story of Jesus. I literally know nothing.
