Monism, Dualism, and Jesus

mayhaps jesus was speaking of the idea of dualism and monism in matthew 6:22-24

Matt 6:22-Matt 6:24 ASV The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

I am so so ignorant on these verses... but i will attempt to offer my impression of it.

It sounds like this is a departure from the mainstream Jewish approach to Satan and the evil inclination.

Is that what you meant by 'dualism and monism'?

Yep, I could definitely see it in that context.

i imagine satan as the wrathful aspect of love; when there is righteous anger.

case in point

Revelation 3:19
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

or if you like,

Song of Songs 8:6
Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

He speaks of the third eye - organ of connection with God , but he also refers to clear path for the light to go through, no obstructions.

The lamp of the body is the eye:
You are what you eat.
if therefore thine eye be single
Purity of heart is to will one thing.
thy whole body shall be full of light.
If you will the good, you will be good
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.
If you will evil, you will be evil
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness!
If you see evil all around, you will become evil and it will consume you
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other.
You cannot serve both good and evil.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
You cannot be both loving and hateful.

See how easy this is.
My ending comment; Light up the darkness!

u missed something obvious. when the eye is single; which is the idea that god is not a respecter of person, then one follows the golden rule and serves all as self.

when the eye is dual, it serves differently; which creates disparity, which is what idolatry does.

Monism is a completely diametrically opposed concept to Judeo-Christian belief. Dualism is the ontology. But I don’t see anything having to do with monism or dualism here. Monism says there is only one kind of substance or thing that everything emanates from.

Hinduism is largely monism because Brahman is the only thing there is. Everything emanates from Brahman. The Big Bang is monism... everything came from the only thing that existed: pure energy. The matter we see is matter converted from energy (E=MC2).

Such a concept is anathema, if not even blasphemy, in Judeo-Christian belief. We are not the same substance as God or emanated from God. Jesus taught in purely dualistic terms.

That is so nonsensical it’s not even nonsensical, it’s past nonsensical.

Make your eye one that it sees hope and grace in creation. Again I say "Light up the darkness" One vision, one people, one humanity. Light up the darkness is what he is saying.

jesus claimed to be the same substance as god. in fact, jesus claimed that all resides in the father

John 14:2
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

John 14:20
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

the idea is further reinforced through out that there was nothing made that wasn't made of the word. in your understand it would be aum.

light comes from love. love is the mystery above all mysteries.

Matt 13:14-Matt 13:16 KJV And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see

He is saying "light up the darkness", don't let your eye just see what is evil but look to the good and have hope

there can be no lighting up anything without love as the catalyst.

paul told you this in 1st corinthians 13

knowledge without love is used to subjugate. knowledge given in love is used to free the enslavement to the ignorance of sin. it makes all equal. love serves all and this is why jesus in the end calls the disciples friends. they knew everything, he knew. now they were to go and do likewise.

Proverbs 10:12
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of love before you

Isaiah 59:17
For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

archtypes don't belong to a culture. they tend to be psychological manifestations in humans appearing in different cultures.

What do archetypes have to do with any of this?

Ask any Christian today if they are the same as, and non-different from God. I’ll wait.
