Trump says Iran made ‘big mistake’ by taking down US drone

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump declared Thursday that “Iran made a very big mistake” by shooting down a U.S. surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz but suggested it was a foolish error rather than an intentional escalation of the tensions that have led to rising fears of open military conflict.

Asked about a U.S. response, the president said pointedly, “You’ll soon find out.”

The downing of the huge, unmanned aircraft , which Iran portrayed as a deliberate defense of its territory rather than a mistake, was a stark reminder of the risk of military conflict between U.S. and Iranian forces as the Trump administration combines a “maximum pressure” campaign of economic sanctions against Iran with a buildup of American forces in the region.

We drop bombs. That's what we do. Now they want to provoke us? I say give them what they're essentially asking for.
Nonsense, this isn't an action movie. It is easy for you and me to sit back and talk casually about war but there is nothing casual about killing people. We need to return to the negotiating table and start talking this out.

We need to take whatever steps are necessary to deescalate this situation. The last thing we need is another armed conflict in the Middle East.

They're a hostile regime. Their current administration can be easily replaced.

All negotiation should end IMO.

Would you like to go first or are you just in favor of sending other people's kids into battle.
There should be a law that makes people who support a war to send in their kids in as well as themselves.

I didn't volunteer, so I'm not going. Everyone has that choice, and those who volunteer are fully aware of what they're signing when they join the armed forces.

...Besides, the rules of war have changed. We just drop bombs now.

Well, you can volunteer and do your part.

...I think it's time we begin war.

Maybe, although it might be better if we calculate the possible response from other major powers. If we act unilaterally, we could find ourselves in a serious quagmire. Other nations might get involved. It's not something we should enter into lightly.

I don't think we have a very strong casus belli here.

This is true. But if the powers that be decide that a war with Iran is somethong they want, then they have my full support as an American citizen.

The missile the Iranians claim to have used was land based and rather short range. The drone could have been over international waters, but they would have had to have been very close to Iranian airspace when this happened.

Well, if the powers that be decide to go to war, then that's what will happen. I don't really see the point of it, though. What do we have to gain by any of this? It's not as if we're going to annex Iran and make it an American colony.

Maybe America should just conquer the entire world. That would solve all the world's problems.

But slights have been made, & leaders are angry.
Should the former go unanswered , leaving the latter unsatisfied?
Only trillions of dollars & millions of lives are at stake.
