So I realise I don’t actually know anything about this.
Which is why I want to ask those here who are trans (or even gender non conforming or whatever moniker you feel comfortable with)
what’s the deal with puberty blockers?
Is it recommended? Helpful? Controversial? Harmful?
Why are they used and is it safe?

Is this a thing that can alleviate the stresses trans young people suffer?

I want to understand.

I think the hormones can delay or minimize puberty. Its a way of holding off on making a decision.

Frontline had a great documentary on the topic several years ago, I recommend it.

Puberty blockers are generally safe. It just holds off puberty until the person is old enough to start cross-sex hormones (generally 16). It helps trans people with strong dysphoria and saves them from going through the wrong puberty. So a trans woman will never have to develop a male bone structure and height, deepened voice, facial and body hair, etc. Trans men won't develop female bone structure (like wide hips), won't develop breasts or have a period. Jazz Jennings went on puberty blockers, for example.

There are some possible issues, though. For example, going on puberty blockers to cross-sex hormones will leave you sterile since the sex organs never get a chance to develop. But cross-sex hormones effectively sterilize you, anyway. It can also cause complications with future sex reassignment surgery, especially with trans women, because they use the existing genital tissue to create females genitals and since their genitals never developed, there could be a lack of tissue. That's actually a problem Jazz had with her surgery but it was worked out.

Puberty blockers aren't pushed on trans people. That's a lie from transphoes, who are usually the ones making it look sinister in the first place. It's a decision between you and your doctor, and it helps with the well-being of many trans people. It gives you time to decide and you can always go off of them.
