The things we do to those we love

Does anyone know what the psychological reasons are for being mean to someone based on the fact that you like them?

If someone is being excessively cold , antagonistic, or cruel towards you, it could actually be because they like you. I don't get it.

Anyway, here's a gory cartoon about what to give that special someone for Valentine's day. Not for most audiences.

Too many broken hearts have fallen in the river
Too many lonely souls have drifted out to sea,
You lay your bets and then you pay the price
The things we do for love, the things we do for love.

Communication is the problem to the answer
You've got her number and your hand is on the phone
The weather's turned and all the lines are down
The things we do for love, the things we do for love.

Like walking in the rain and the snow
When there's nowhere to go
And I'm feelin' like a part of me is dying
And I'm looking for the answer in her eyes.
You think you're gonna break up
Then she says she wants to make up.

Ooh she made me love her
Ooh she has a way
Ooh she has me crawling up the wall.

Like walking in the rain and the snow
When there's nowhere to go
And I'm feelin' like a part of me is dying
And I'm looking for the answer in her eyes.

Ooh she has a way
Ooh she has me crawling up the wall.

A compromise would surely help the situation
Agree to disagree but disagree the part
When after all it's just a compromise of
The things we do for love, the things we do for love....

The Things we do for love...Salvador's 10cc

I don’t know. It could have to do with self esteem issues maybe. If someone feels like they are destructive, or are somehow undeserving of love, they may push others away. Or trust issues causing a protective wall of curmudgeonlyness being put up.
But I’m no Freud so what do I know?

Antagonistic and cruelty are not love.
