What brings you joy and fulfilment ?

When I was religious as a young person, it never gave me any joy or fulfilment, even though I was quite devout for a little while. Shedding that burden by the time I married at the age of 19 in 1969 improved my life immeasurably.

We raised three wonderful birth daughters and adopted two lads with learning difficulties. The younger one who is now 34, has Down's Syndrome and has brought great joy to all who know him, even though he is quite severely mentally disabled. We are so very grateful he came into our family's life. :)

I get a boost if I can help others less fortunate than ourselves. My husband and I donate quite generously to a number of charities, we are very fortunate we are in a position to do so.

Like others our life is not perfect, my husband's brain haemorrhage, which trashed half his brain in 2005, was a huge low point. He has worked hard trying to put back what he has lost, but he will never be as before, and has other medical problems too as he gets older, he will be 72 next week. However, we still have a lot for which to be thankful, our children look out for us and rally round whenever we need any assistance.

All in all I consider that my life is very fulfilled.

Music. I consider it to an extent to be one of the greatest forms of free speech.

I must admit I have never enjoyed music, even though my family is musical. My late father had a very good voice, and toured the US with a UK choir when I was 11 in 1961. My sisters also have good voices. Our three daughters have good voices too and play musical instruments.

My singing voice is horrific, I had no interest in learning to play the piano like my younger sisters.

I developed a deep interest in it after using music to drowned out my parents' arguing when I was a teenager.

This to me is a very profound question.

Many experiences have been joyful for me. They all happen, at the root, when my encrusted egoistic sense of self thins and something deeper and more universal floods my awareness.

This can happen in a movie scene, while meditating, listening to a song, watching puppies play, seeing the joyous smile of a young child and in many other ways.

This is a photo of our adopted DS son taken 13 years ago with one of our grandsons when he was a baby. He has brought so much joy into our lives, and to the lives of everyone who meets him. When the grandchildren were young they used argue about whose turn it was to sit next him. "You sat next to Uncle J-P last time, it is my turn today.":D He was so patient with them and built endless towers of toy bricks for them to knock down. He is now in a care home, where he is loved by all the staff. :)
