10 laughably erroneous claims of the bible

8. It claims that the mustard seed is the smallest seed, when in fact, the orchid seed, among others, are smaller than the mustard seed:

Matthew 13:32:1 "Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."

Which plant has the smallest seed?
"The world's smallest seeds, which have no endosperm and contain underdeveloped embryos, are produced by certain epiphytic orchids (family Orchidaceae) in the tropical rainforest. Some seeds are only 1/300th of an inch (85 micrometers) long, which is below the resolving power of the unaided human eye.

When Jesus mentioned this he used objects which are relatable to his followers. He does not intend his words to be used in Botany but to be used to develop such great faith. Imagine how inappropriate for Jesus to discuss the parable in another way?

Matthew 13:31-32 New International Version (NIV)
He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

to

“The kingdom of heaven is like a certain epiphytic orchids (family Orchidaceae) in the tropical rainforest [which you all are clueless], which a man took and planted in his ornamental pot....." What would have been the reaction of the average Israelite Jew during his time on earth?

9. It claims that ants have no rulers, when in fact, ant colonies have a hierarchical structure with a queen (ruler) and worker ants:

Proverbs 6:6-7: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,"

upload_2019-6-15_15-20-4.jpeg

The term "queen" is not particularly apt, as the queen ant has very little control over the colony as a whole. She has no known authority or decision-making control; instead, her sole function is to reproduce. Therefore, the queen is best understood as the reproductive element of a colony rather than a leader. Once a colony is established, the worker ants meet the queen's needs such as giving her food and disposing of her waste. Because ant social structure is very complex and individual ants are relatively simple, an ant colony can be thought of as a single organism, and the individual ants as cells or limbs of the organism, as the individuals can rarely survive on their own. In a colony, some ants may be unrelated to the queen(s), such as when a brood is captured in a raid and raised as the colony's own.

I believe even en.wikipedia refutes your claim - "ant colonies have a hierarchical structure with a queen (ruler) and worker ants"

That does not look like a mustard plant. They get up to 20 feet tall and exceptional ones get to the height of 30 feet. Plus that seed looks a bit larger than the mustard seeds in my spice cupboard:

Of course that is just another case where the Bible was wrong.

10. It claims that pi is equal to 3.

2 Chronicles 4:2: "He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it."

Excuse me what Pi?

Even another version of the Bible didn't show what the Pi is all about.

2 Chronicles 4:1-3 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)
He made a bronze altar 30 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 15 feet high.

Then he made the cast metal basin, 15 feet from brim to brim, perfectly round. It was 7½ feet high and 45 feet in circumference. The likeness of oxen was below it, completely encircling it, ten every half yard, completely surrounding the basin. The oxen were cast in two rows when the basin was cast.

The Bible contains numerous scientific errors, including (but of course not limited to) the following:

1. It says the earth is flat:

Isaiah 40:22: "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

2. It says that the earth rests upon pillars:

1 Samuel 2:8 "..for the pillars of the Earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them...."

Job 9:6 "...and the pillars thereof tremble..."
Psalm 75:3 "...I bear up the pillars of it ..."

3. It claims that the sky is a solid firmament and that water is above it:

Genesis 1:6 "....and God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the
waters from the waters."

4. It claims the stars are small enough to fall to the earth without destroying the earth:

Revelation 6:13: "and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind."

Revelation 8:10:
"And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;"

5. It claims that the earth does not move:

Pslam 96:10 "...the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved."

6. It claims that the sun revolves around the earth, rather than the other way around:

Psalm 19:6: "It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth."

7. It claims that insects have four legs:

Leviticus 11:20-23: "All flying insects
that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest."

9. It claims that ants have no rulers, when in fact, ant colonies have a hierarchical structure with a queen (ruler) and worker ants:

Proverbs 6:6-7: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,"

10. It claims that pi is equal to 3.

2 Chronicles 4:2: "He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it."

My own personal opinion is that these are just personal interpretations.

I believe there is a rational and reasonable interpretation that is in accordance with science and reason. There are a lot of symbolical meanings in these verses but those who take it literally of course it doesn’t make sense as it is a spiritual book emphasizing spiritual realities and needs to be viewed in that context for it to make any sense.

Hebrews 11:1-3 New International Version (NIV)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

What the hell is a "properly written" prophecy?
Good question:

Criteria for a true prophecy[edit]
For a statement to be Biblical foreknowledge, it must fit all of the five following criteria:

  1. It must be accurate. A statement cannot be Biblical foreknowledge if it is not accurate, because knowledge (and thus foreknowledge) excludes inaccurate statements. TLDR: It's true.
  2. It must be in the Bible. A statement cannot be Biblical foreknowledge if it is not in the Bible, because Biblical by definition foreknowledge can only come from the Bible itself, rather than modern reinterpretations of the text. TLDR: It's in plain words in the Bible.
  3. It must be precise and unambiguous. A statement cannot be Biblical foreknowledge if meaningless philosophical musings or multiple possible ideas could fulfill the foreknowledge, because ambiguity prevents one from knowing whether the foreknowledge was intentional rather than accidental. TLDR: Vague "predictions" don't count.
  4. It must be improbable. A statement cannot be Biblical foreknowledge if it reasonably could be the result of a pure guess, because foreknowledge requires a person to actually know something true, while a correct guess doesn't mean that the guesser knows anything. This also excludes contemporary beliefs that happened be true but were believed to be true without solid evidence. TLDR: Lucky guesses don't count.
  5. It must have been unknown. A statement cannot be Biblical foreknowledge if it reasonably could be the result of an educated guess based off contemporary knowledge, because foreknowledge requires a person to know a statement when it would have been impossible, outside of supernatural power, for that person to know it. TLDR: Ideas of the time don't count.

Circles are flat. And if one goes to the original Hebrew it is even clearer that it refers to a Flat Earth. Just because some modern translators dishonestly reintepret the verse does not mean that it refers to a globe. The term used "Chuwg" refers to an inscribed circle, as with a compass. They can only be flat.

Like it or not it is still an erroneous claim.

There was a Hebrew word for "ball" and the writer of that verse did not use that word. Do you know why?

1899 is not modern. Even Hawaii wasn't a state of the US in 1899

The problem is how ridiculously wrong does the Bible have to be for it to be taken metaphorically and not literally? Are you trying to say that the entire first two books of the Bible should be taken metaphorically?

A little bit of literal and a little bit of metaphor
This is my understanding of the Bible:

MILLIONS of people accept the Bible as the basis of their faith. For thousands of years, it touched the lives of many. No other religious books can equal the influence of the Bible regarding religion, literature, and civilization.

Let us first have an introduction to this book called the Bible.

What is this Book called the Bible?

The following describe what the Bible is:

  • The Bible is a collection of sixty-six (66) books.
  • Generally, the Bible is divided into two: the Old Testament and the New Testament.
  • Others simply define the Old Testament as the collection of the biblical books written before the time of Christ or before the Christian era, and the New Testament as the collection of the biblical books written after the ascension of Christ or during the first century of the Christian era.
  • The Old Testament is composed of 39 books.
  • The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew, and a few parts were written in Aramaic.
  • The New Testament is composed of 27 books.
  • The New Testament was originally written in Greek (Koine Greek or “Common Greek”).
  • These biblical books were written in different places and in different times by about forty men.
  • The biblical books were written for a period of 1,500 years. The first five books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) were written about 1447-1407 BC. While the last book of the Bible (the book of Revelation) was written about 90-100 AD.
  • The biblical books are divided into chapters and verses.
  • In addition, the biblical books were written in different literary form (e.g. historical narrative, biography, poetry, etc).
  • The Bible was also translated into different languages and dialects (translated into about 2,200 languages and dialects). This is the reason why we have the English Bible and the Pilipino Bible.
  • The Bible is also a book of:
    • History
    • Religion
    • Prophecy
  • However, the Bible is also not an open book, but a mystery hidden in ages.
The modern biblical criticisms regard the Bible as an ancient literature that can be understood through the studies of the oral tradition behind the document (Form Criticism); the studies of the document itself, its method, style, and purpose of the author, the written and oral sources he used (Literary Criticism); the study of the editing of Biblical books (Redaction criticism); and the comparison of manuscripts of the Bible in the original languages and versions, including quotations by ancient authors, to determine as nearly as possible the original wording (Textual Criticism).

These scholars believe that they can understand the Bible through the method they used to understand other ancient literary documents. However, unlike other books, the Holy Scriptures or the Bible is inspired by God (II Tim. 3:15-17). It contains not only moral principles but also the right doctrines that will guide one toward becoming a complete man of God. It is the only book that will lead man back to his Creator and to salvation.

But there is one thing about the Bible, which everyone must understand – that it is not an open book, as many believe it to be. This is attested by one of God’s inspired writers:

“Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began.” (Romans 16:25 NKJV)

The Bible or the word of God is a “mystery kept secret since the world began.” Thus, it is no ordinary book that could be understands or interpreted but just anybody who can read, nor even through methods of modern criticisms. This is why the apostle Paul quipped:

“Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (II Tim. 3:7 NKJV)

So, it wrong to regard the Bible as an ancient document that can be understood through the methods use to understand other ancient literature. It is also wrong to think that the Bible can be understood by themselves. Even though a person knew the ancient Biblical languages, but let us always be reminded that according to the Bible, “Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth.” How true indeed! There is only one Bible yet there are so many different and contradictory beliefs. Interpretations, and teachings spawned by these preachers and scholars.

Who then can understand the Bible? Our Lord Jesus Christ declared this to His disciples:

“And He said to them, "To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables,” (Mark 4:11 NKJV)

Without being given understanding or revelation, one can never know the truth. This compels us to ask further, “Who, then, is given understanding of God’s words and, therefore, can preach them?” The Lord Himself further clarified:

“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.” (John 3:34, NKJV)

Those sent by God – His inspired messengers – are the ones exclusively given the understanding of His words: they speak God’s words. On the contrary, those who are not sent cannot preach the true gospel. They cannot lead man to the true understanding of God’s words and, eventually, to salvation. Apostle Paul wrote:

“And how shall they preach unless they are sent?…” (Romans 10:15, NKJV)

Only those sent by God can preach His words for to them have been revealed His mystery. Those who are not sent will only lead man to his own destruction (II Peter 3:16).

Yes, because properly written prophecies always fail. But the problem is that many Christians do not realize that overly vague prophecies automatically fail. If there is more than one possible "fulfillment" then it is a failed prophecy since once can never know if those were the events in the prophecy or an even later one.

The Bible includes prophecies.
These prophecies foretell things that would happen.
They are hidden in mystery.
And it is up to those who are sent to reveal them.

THE BIBLE DECLARES WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

The Bible contains several examples of God’s words that were declared long ago but were appointed to take place in the time when the end is near. One of these is that written in Revelation chapter 6:12-13:

“I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.” (Revelation 6:12-13 NKJV)

In this verse, the Bible is telling about a “great earthquake.” Although there were many “great earthquakes” happened in the past, but the Bible explicitly tells us that this “great earthquake” is followed by the “sun became black as sackcloth of hair,” the “moon became like blood,” and the “stars of heaven fell to the earth.” These distinguished the “great earthquake” of Revelation 6:12-13 from other earthquakes occurred in the past.

The fulfillment of this “great earthquake” is the earthquake of 1755 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Lisbon earthquake is one of the strongest earthquakes recorded, felt in a radius of about forty times larger that the United Kingdom and claimed 6,000 lives (The Physical Earth, pp. 28-29).

I believe I am certain that the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 is the fulfillment of the “great earthquake” mentioned in Revelation 6:12-13, because this is the earthquake followed by the “sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became like blood” which the fulfillment is what history called as the “Black Friday” of May 19, 1780 in New England (The New International Encyclopedia, volume VI, p. 502).

Take note that according to the Book of Revelation the “great earthquake” was followed by “sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the “moon became like blood” which followed by “stars of heaven fell to the earth.”

The fulfillment of the “stars of heaven fell to the earth” that followed the “sun became black as sackcloth of hair” and the “moon became like blood” is the “meteor shower” of 1833. In the night of November 12, 1833, hundreds of meteorites (also called “falling stars”) seen in the whole eastern part of the United States (N.E.S., p. 1217).

Take note of the following:

Revelation 6:12-13
“I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.” (Revelation 6:12-13 NKJV)

(1) “there was a great earthquake”

1755

The great earthquake in Lisbon

(2) “and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.”

1780

The “Black Friday “of New England

(3) “And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.”

1833

“Meteor shower” seen in the whole eastern part of the United States

The “great earthquake” followed by the “sun became black as sackcloth of hair,” the “moon became like blood,” and the “stars of heaven fell to the earth” mentioned in Revelation 6:12-13 is followed by the coming of the “great day of their wrath”:

“The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Revelation 6:14-17 NIV)

Because of the “great day of the wrath” of the Lord, the “sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.” The “great day of the wrath” of the Lord mentioned in Revelation is not the Day of Judgment but a war which also mentioned in the prophecy written in the Book of Isaiah:

“Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it! The LORD is angry with all nations; his wrath is upon all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter.
“All the stars of the heavens will be dissolved and the sky rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree.” (Isaiah 34:1-2, 4 NIV)

What the Book of Revelation mentioned that “the sky receded like a scroll” is also mentioned in Isaiah 34:1-2 and 4, “the sky rolled up like a scroll.” Isaiah also mentioned the “wrath” of the Lord. Thus, Revelation 6:12-13 and Isaiah 34:1-2 and 4 are related prophecies.

The prophecy of Revelation 6:12-13 and the prophecy of Isaiah 34:1-2 and 4 are both referring to a “great war.” Isaiah said, “Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it! The LORD is angry with all nations; his wrath is upon all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter.”

Because of this “great war,” according to Revelation “The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place...” The “sky” or “heaven” mentioned by the Book of Revelation refers to the “heavens of men” (Lev. 26:19), and the “glory of the kings” (Is. 14:18). The “mountains that were removed” refers to “kings” (Rev. 17:9-10).

The prophecy indeed came to past. The “great war” referred to by the biblical prophecies is the “Great War” of 1914-1918” also called as First World War (WWI):

“The first great campaign on the southeastern battle grounds of the Great War began on July 27, 1914, when the Austrian troops undertook their first invasion of Serbia.” (The Story of the Great War from official Sources, p. 291).

As the prophecy said, the “sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place,” the emperor of Russia, Austria and Germany were dethroned, and also the kings of Greece and Bulgaria, because of the First World War. Also, the government of these nations was changed (Modern Times and the Living past, p. 687).

The “islands” that were “removed from its place” were the “colonies.” Like the colonies of Germany in the Pacific, after the Great War, were transferred to Japan and England (M.T.L.P., pp. 707-707).

How about the hiding in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains of the “kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man”” This is the testimony of the history:

“The First World War was unlike any war in the past…This was the first war in ‘three dimensions,’ the first war in which cities were bombed from the air and winged warriors fought among the clouds. Of course the airplanes of 1914 were not so past, so formidable, nor so numerous as those of today…The soldiers had to turn themselves into beavers and moles and dig deep trenches…” (W.Hist., pp. 478-479)

The great War of 1914-1918 was the first war which cities were bombed from the air, thus people have to hide themselves in the air-raid shelters. The soldiers had to turn themselves into beavers and moles and dig deep trenches.

Take note that the First World War that began in 1914 was also the war that was followed by the “four angels” holding back the “wind”:

“After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.” (Revelation 7:1 NKJV)

The “wind” refers to a “war” (Jer. 4:11-13 and 19). The “four corners of the earth” refers to the “four directions of the earth” (I Chron. 9:24). Thus, “wind of the four corners of the earth” is referring to the world war.

The word “angel” came from the Greek word which literally means “messenger,” and messenger means “sent.” According to Apostle Peter, the kings, governor or leaders of nation are “sent by Him”:

“Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.” (I Peter 2:13-14 NKJV)

The fulfillment of the prophecy:

“Orlando of Italy, Lloyd George of Great Britain, Clemenceau of France, and Wilson of America who were called the Big Four when they met in Paris to confer concerning the Treaty of Versailles.” (World History, p. 494)

The Bible also explicitly said that there was “silence in heaven for about half an hour” when the seventh seal was opened:

“When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.” (Revelation 8:1 NKJV)

As already mentioned, the “heaven” refers to “heavens of men” (Lev. 26:19). Also take note that “one day to God is one thousand years to man”:

“But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (II Peter 3:8 NKJV)

One day to God is one thousand years to man. One day is 24 hours. Dividing one thousand years with 24 hours is “one hour is 41 years and 8 months.”

One day = One thousand years
24 hors = 1,000 years
1 hours = 41 years and 8 months
Half hour = 20 years and 10 months

Did the prophecy come to past?

First World War ended on November 11, 1918
Second World War started on September 1, 1939

YEAR MONTH DAY

1939 9 1
1918 11 11 .
20 years 9 months 20 days

Indeed, Revelation 8:1 came to past.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, the Bible is indeed the word of God. “What God was, the word was.” God’s power to declare what the future holds, telling us the things to come long before they happen. Since the power of God’s words are found in the words written in the Bible, the Bible also declares what the future holds, long before it happens. Thus the Bible is indeed not a human text, not a collection of myth, not in equal status with other “scriptures,” but the only Sacred Scripture where the words of God are written.

Now that is pure desperation.

So we can eat flies. Flies that love to land on any sort of animal waste. They travel on all six when on the ground. In fact I am unaware of any insects that only go on four legs.

My sister accidentally ate a fly sometime ago.
Nothing bad happened.

Lord. Who would care to take the time to refute such misunderstanding?

The positive side is, you took the time to read the Bible. Even if you found that nonsense at a link with Bible verses. Now if you'd only read it you'd know more than you think you do so as to erroneously mock what isn't actually saying what you think it says.
SO good!

1899 is not modern. Even Hawaii wasn't a state of the US in 1899

Isaiah 40:22 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.

Not circle, not ball.

But the globe of the earth

And that is from a Bible dated 1899
The Bible was written a long time before 1899. The original says that the Earth is flat. Dishonest and incorrect modern (and compared to 600 BC 1899 is modern) translations may mistakenly claim a globe. But if one goes back to the Hebrew it says "circle" and circles are flat.

And they all fail. So why even mention prophecies?
