10 laughably erroneous claims of the bible

Rational Agnostic

The Bible contains numerous scientific errors, including (but of course not limited to) the following:

1. It says the earth is flat:

Isaiah 40:22: "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

2. It says that the earth rests upon pillars:

1 Samuel 2:8 "..for the pillars of the Earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them...."

Job 9:6 "...and the pillars thereof tremble..."
Psalm 75:3 "...I bear up the pillars of it ..."

3. It claims that the sky is a solid firmament and that water is above it:

Genesis 1:6 "....and God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the
waters from the waters."

4. It claims the stars are small enough to fall to the earth without destroying the earth:

Revelation 6:13: "and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind."

Revelation 8:10:
"And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;"

5. It claims that the earth does not move:

Pslam 96:10 "...the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved."

6. It claims that the sun revolves around the earth, rather than the other way around:

Psalm 19:6: "It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth."

7. It claims that insects have four legs:

Leviticus 11:20-23: "All flying insects
that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest."

8. It claims that the mustard seed is the smallest seed, when in fact, the orchid seed, among others, are smaller than the mustard seed:

Matthew 13:32:1 "Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."

9. It claims that ants have no rulers, when in fact, ant colonies have a hierarchical structure with a queen (ruler) and worker ants:

Proverbs 6:6-7: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,"

10. It claims that pi is equal to 3.

2 Chronicles 4:2: "He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it."

Lord. Who would care to take the time to refute such misunderstanding?

The positive side is, you took the time to read the Bible. Even if you found that nonsense at a link with Bible verses. Now if you'd only read it you'd know more than you think you do so as to erroneously mock what isn't actually saying what you think it says.

Yes. One could claim this. But is it not supposed to be THE UNERRING WORD OF GOD?

Or is it just another collection of fanciful stories, written by a collection of various, and fallible men?

Can’t have it both ways. So which is it?
The OP shows that it is wrong in parts, therefore the decision is made for you. Its just another story book. Sorry. Nothing magical.

For teenagers, being an angry anarchist atheist is a form of rebellion. They can't rebel too much against their parents or their allowance will be cut, so they rebel in other ways such as ridiculing secular and religious institutions. It's a normal phase for them like pimples.

There are clear errors in the verses I cited. I know you don't like learning that your favorite book has errors.

Yes. One could claim this. But is it not supposed to be THE UNERRING WORD OF GOD?....
It depends who you ask. Only about 24% of Americans believe that is true, but about 71% of Americans are Christian. The 2% who are Jewish should be added to the 71%.

It's the internet; you can claim to be a 1,000 year old man and I can claim to be a hot, virginal young girl. Doesn't mean it's true. The only credibility we have on forums like this is how we post.

In any case, your responses never addressed the actual original post and the biblical errors. Trying to change the subject is a classic tactic used by theists when they know they have lost a debate.

Well, I'll be damned. And all this time, I'd been using it as a scientific textbook. Now that I know the truth, I guess I'm just going to have to denounce my belief in God and everything that goes along with a belief in Him. :p

Many of these, as per Reverend Bob's post, could be considered figures of speech, &c.
I's also agree that ants have no rulers. The queen doesn't "rule."

Why would angry teenagers care?

FWIW, Genesis is fables and stories IMO. Stories that had been told around the campfires for thousands of years before they were written down, supposedly by Moses.

More like 10 misunderstandings of an atheist!

1. It says the earth is flat:

Isaiah 40:22: "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

That's a stretch to say the least. Talk about jumping to conclusions.

Wouldn't ya say that looks like a pillar or column? Yes I agree it does as well.

3. It claims that the sky is a solid firmament and that water is above it:

Genesis 1:6 "....and God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the
waters from the waters."

Another stretch of your imaginition.

Well meteorites belt the earth 24/7 and we don't even notice. Except for the occasional one big enough to be visible and "We wish upon a shooting star". These are not big enough to destroy the earth, obviously.

The word star does not mean star as in like the sun for instance. In your examples star is a other word for angel, specifically fallen angel(s).

5. It claims that the earth does not move:

Pslam 96:10 "...the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved.

Nice try, quote mining to take it out of context. Try being honest at least?

6. It claims that the sun revolves around the earth, rather than the other way around:

Psalm 19:6: "It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth."

Another stretch to suit your bias, so boring.

Again, your stretching. /yawn

The purpose of that verse is not to declare the mustard seed as the smallest. Its conveying the idea that something so small can become great.

Why are such a literalist for? Are you a closet fundamentalist?

9. It claims that ants have no rulers, when in fact, ant colonies have a hierarchical structure with a queen (ruler) and worker ants:

Proverbs 6:6-7: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,"

Again context, boring.

10. It claims that pi is equal to 3.

2 Chronicles 4:2: "He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it."

Pi is 3.14 etc

Considering the conversion and it's an ancient people, that's pretty dang spot on.

:D

Overall I give it a F. You didn't even try to be creative. Another great of example of how a non-believer fails at understanding the word.

You are the one who err's with your Sophistry in this matter. All of your alleged claims can be addressed and rebuked by the Bible in its proper context and history. As I said, who would bother? You are clearly happy to think those Bible verses are error's in God's understanding. Egocentrism and pride precludes your realizing it is you that lacks understanding.
