Social Progress

As a self-proclaimed Progressivist, I'd like to pitch my ideas on the subject of social progress.

-An idea which fascinates me is the concept of self-moderation. Self-moderation is when a community gets together on a shades of grey, not really rule breaking, important issue, and works at presenting themselves better. An example of self-moderation would be if members say, got together and decided not to post in R rated threads that pop up from unknown members. Just an example.

-I've been noticing both in life and on the forum, that people point to other groups of people saying that they're not depicting something well, when it's possible there is an Age Gap in which points are being lost in translation due to the differences in members' ages. Just a theory.

-I noticed a brand new term pop up in the evolution of language. "Toxicity". When a person says that a discussion group has toxicity, they are stating in neutral way that an above-average freedom of expression is allowed, which may get in the way of being seen as a holy discussion group. I like this new term.

This is all I've got for now. I will try to add more later.

Sound suspiciously like group think to me. Not a fan. Free thought is the only acceptable thought, even if its ugly thought.

I agree with you here, though the generational gap is only part of what causes communication problems.

I've never heard toxicity used as a neutral term. It's always used in a derogatory way. As in "toxic masculinity". Though it's been around for a few years now and is starting to lose its steam.[/QUOTE]

With intellectual honesty, I will admit there are less good cases, like sports teams, and more bad cases in the world.

Well its ideological group think I dislike I should probably emphasize. It leads to echo chambers where the same idea ricochets around with no one to oppose it. This leads to zealotry of that idea. Even a good thing can be ruined if its allowed to continue to grow unchecked.

@AT-AT I’ve been disappointed too much, too many times, to have any real hope for this, but to leave no stone unturned, I’ll invite you to read a thread that I started some time ago, and see if gives you any ideas, or if you want to post any comments or questions.
