The power of forgivness.

I am no sure whether the following verse falls in the category of forgiveness. Does anyone know of any biblical verses that do reference forgiveness?

If not in the Old Testament, did Jesus talk about this?

(Lev 19:34 KJV) But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God

Maybe this verse would help?
“Then Peter came to Him and said, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.’” Matthew 18:21-22.

Thank you very much for providing that verse. I have spent too much time reading/reviewing the old; now I see it's time to move on and walk the life of Jesus, my savior

again, thanks

To forgive someone means to let go of it, and be able to live in the present moment, and not dwelling in something that happend in the past.

But it does not seems like human beings are able to forgive anymore? Why is this so in your understanding?

What people fail to understand is that forgiveness is for the person doing the forgiving.

It's not about clearing the other person of the wrongs they commited.

It's about me letting go of the anger and resentment I feel because of the wrongs committed against me.

So that I can move on and live a healthy productive life.

I learned this the hard way because I once thought forgiveness was about negating someone else wrongs. And so the anger stayed in me and tore me up inside. Only when I realized forgiveness was about letting go of that anger for my own good did my life behind to turn around.

Here i am agree with you :) Forgiving others by letting go of the action they did toward you and it lead to a calm and mindful life :) No need to stay in the past

I Googled “forgiveness” and to my pleasant surprise I found this--

Ephesians 4:32
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Mark 11:25
And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 6:15
But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 18:21-22
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Luke 6:37
“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;

Well justice is a more powerful remedy against anger and resentment than forgiveness. I don't want to forgive some people, I want them to receive justice and it is healthy and productive to seek justice

Only problem with that is once you get a taste for it, it never goes away. It's basically a drug. You can get justice and still forgive though.

Personally I never have any problem with what anyone does, even if it makes me writhe. People are just human and human behavior is just varied up.

When someone can't forgive anymore, that just means that the person lost the connection with the Love inside of him

But it might be possible to make the compassion within this person to arise again and forgivness will be possible again

Anger arises when you allow the other to cross your values or borders while it does upset you
So the anger comes from inner weakness, hence you are not able to forgive anymore

The weakness as you call it is same as attachments to ego/self and as long we do not let go of ego/self we will struggle with forgivness, this is true.
But attachments are also to Greed, hate, jealosy, and so on too. And to be fully able to forgive anyone at any time, this attachments must be let go of (detached to)

Hi Amanaki,

I'm not sure about whether people are less apt to forgive now as compared with the past. I believe people have a tendency to distort what happens in their personal lifetimes as compared with what has happened prior to their own lifespan. As a student of history, I can see how people tend to think of what occurs in their own lifetimes as somehow more novel, or worse, or better, than in the past, which is often not actually the case.

But I agree that forgiveness is primarily about releasing our own attachments to the anger and resentment that we feel in response to the harmful actions of others. Really, it's about our own mental and emotional health, not with the other who has wronged us and/or others. To tell another person you forgive them can be problematic (as Reverend Bob points out) when the other person is not evidently changing the wrong behavior; telling such a person you forgive them can be detrimentally interpreted as "keep doing what you're doing." Nonetheless, one can still internally forgive someone, meaning they can release the attachment and inner turmoil caused by the other's actions.

Forgetting (as in "forgive and forget") is another matter entirely, and has everything to do with the other person. It's only common sense to not forget in this sense: to be wary of someone who has made poor decisions about a matter or matters in the past.

On a personal note, what I do find more difficult to deal with in recent years are people who not only make bad decisions that lead to clear harm for others (or even to themselves), but who show no evidence of learning anything at all from their mistakes. It can be maddening to see someone lie and stumble over explaining their mistakes away. But at least you know such a person knows they're dead wrong at heart, and therefore the potential for change is there, at least. The failure to even recognize that mistakes were even made, when they very clearly were made to anyone using at least half of their brain, is particularly infuriating to me most of all these days; I've lost a lot of tolerance and respect for the willfully ignorant.

I thought my word-use "inner weakness" in my quote was more than obvious to include "greed, hate, jealousy" and so on

The use of "but" creates a negative feeling (going against what I said)
Can that be some hidden irritation in you (it happened twice in a row, that you replied to me that way)?

Anyway my word choice "losing the connection" implies that reconnection is also possible.

No i do not get irritated, there is no need to feel irritation. I guess my wording in the english language can be seen as somewhat poor because it is my second language. So that i use the word "But" twice is not a meaning of negativity :)
The meaning behind my answer was to say, even those who can not forgive today can be able to forgive when they see that compassion is a good way :)
