Indian officials travel 40 miles into forest so one man can vote
From CNN's Swati Gupta

Bharatdas Darshandas, a local priest, lives at a remote temple in the depths of the Gir forest.

A day before the third phase of elections began, five officials traveled about 60 kilometers (40 miles) into the forest to set up an entire voting facility for one man.

India's Election Commission must provide all voters with a polling booth in their vicinity.

“This is done for every election. The Election Commission criteria is that we have to provide polling station for every person within a two-kilometre radius,” said Vinod Chandra Prajapati, deputy district election officer.

The Gir forest is one of the oldest sanctuaries for lions in India and is uninhabited for the most part.

As Darshandas stepped out of the polling booth, he said, “I have today and I would like to ask everyone to use their individual vote and there should be 100 percent voting. Just like there was 100% voting here, it should be so everywhere.”

Due to the geography and the extensive terrain of India, the Election Commission has to ensure that every person is provided with a polling booth in their vicinity.

“Because he resides there, we have to get here. Whether he casts his vote or not, it does not matter -- we have to go there and set up the booth,” said Prajapati.

Moreover, elections are quite fair (barring a few voting booths where problems occur) and even in the remotest parts the voting is by electronic machines (since a long time) and the people are familiar with the procedures. We have polling stations high up in Himalayas too (15,256 feet).

"Shimla: It is strange but true! The world's highest polling station at 15,256 feet in Tashigang village of Himachal Pradesh ..
World's highest polling booth records 143% turnout
(Well, of course, the reporter flipped. I do not know what the reporter means here).

Congratulations on electing a veritable fascist.
That is a canard floated by Western media. Look at the percentage of wins. That would not have been possible unless some of our 15% Muslims had not voted for him. In four Bihar constituencies with Muslim Majority (more than 50% Muslims voters), his party has won. I do not have the figures right now (too early), but when they are available, I will post them here.

In 2014 elections 9% Muslims voted for him. And that was only the beginning. It may be better this time, because all those parties which expected Muslims votes (Indian National Congress of Nehru Gandhi dynasty - all India presence, Samajvadi Party - Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party - Uttar Pradesh, Rashtriya Janata Dal - Bihar, etc.) have lost heavily. The dynasty heir, Rahul Gandhi has lost his hereditary seat in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

Edit: FYI, Of the 103 seats where Muslims are deciders, 57 have gone to Modi and 20 to the opposition combine of Gandhis.

Congratulations on having a majority of your People, participate in Government, doing their Civic Duty.

The USA, who's citizens seem to think voting is a Chore, and mostly stay home-- this in spite of every state now providing Vote By Mail or other Early Voting opportunities for anyone who asks.

And that's the key, isn't it? They have to care enough, to either ask or get out and vote. By law in the USA? If you ask your boss, he *has* to give you time off to go vote!

India has set a High Standard, with respect to participation, here.

I think only Iceland has a higher turnout...?

Oh, in India election day is a holiday. It will vary from one region to another. Election day has been called the "Festival of India". Indian electorate is so huge and at times very unruly. So the Election Commission has to make security arrangements and the voting is spread out (seven phases, starting from 11 April to 19 May). We get the result in one day as the whole exercise is with electronic machines (i.e., today, the counting is going on and the latest trends can be accessed from the site mentioned below).

In Mauritius you can't buy booze on election day, until polls close. I guess they want sober voters.

Yeah, that is true for India too, but as you know, there are always ways. Huge hauls of liquor from the contestants meant to bribe the voters are intercepted in every election.

Situation this morning, local time 7 a.m.:
BJP+ 352 (67%, 23 majority, likelihood of at least one party, BJD of Odisha in the Others group, to join Modi combine with 12 parliamentarians), Congress+ 95, Others 95, Total 542,

The problem of the bad economy remains. Hope something gets done about it soon, otherwise the engineering students I teach would struggle to get good jobs. :(

Economy, despite what many politicians lead us to believe, has several other factors involved, like supply and demand. Engineering students may be well advised to take up an honourable trade, or engineering technology.

Part of the problem is that the curriculum is out of date with the requirements of the market, not enough practical experience. The problem is compounded by private colleges which belong to politicians who have no interest in education other than the money that the institutions can generate. Every second institution is a deemed university. A road in Ranchi has more than 100 universities. The previous governments have played with the university concept (including one in which Murli Manohar Joshi was the education minister (Vajpayi time). So, third grade product is but natural. Just paper degrees are not enough.
