I'm going to start doing this because more learned people say so.
(I like doing what I'm told...tis in me nature.)
After doing a teensie bit'o research, I'll use alcohol.
(And it's now on sale at Menards.)

What's the reason the experts give?

I have done the similar since I was a wee lad. Still don't see a reason to disinfect my surgery tools though.

Have a few drinks and you'll feel disinfected. Or something.

Spread of disease. You can see it with companies that do yard work or those working in housing complex. The worker will trim hedges picking up a disease from one tree while passing it on to other via the method they use to trim. Happens all the time here.

@Shad intervened with some actual facts. I suspect that it's like everything else - sometimes a good idea and sometimes a waste of time.

Does the alcohol have to be from Menards? Can it be from a grocery store in 12 oz., amber bottles? Do I have to apply it to the tools? That seems like such a waste.

Menards alcohol is less than $9/gallon.
The amber colored stuff is much spendier....& it leads to napping.

Yah I could see one not feeling/see it is needed for small private garden compared to a business.
