It turns out that this poll was a very interesting way to measure bias based on ignorance of the subject exposing underlying bias against "Arabs"

To the first question,

"56 percent of Americans think Arabic numerals should be banned from schools, while 29 percent said they should be included in the curriculum. 15 percent had no opinion. Out of those who answered "no," 72 percent were Republican and 40 percent identified as Democrats."

The arabic numerals are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

To the second question,

"73 percent of Democrats said no, while 33 percent of Republicans said yes". This is close to about the same number ignoring non-responses since 73 Democratic no is about equal to 67 Republican no. This part of the story is badly written.

The creation theory of Catholic priest George Lemaitre is the accepted big bang

Survey: Most Americans say ‘Arabic numerals' should not be taught in school

..,
I think you meant to say LVI percent of Americans think Arabic numerals should be banned.

I just realized that you got me on the second question. The “creation theory of George Lemaitre”. I want to say I just read it too quickly, but I guess I have to admit my “tribal bias” was at work as well.

Trick questions. Haha. First to vote ‘both.’

ETA: And I just now went back to read the spoilered OP.

I voted the Arabic numerals even though we already teach them.

Religion shouldn't be taught in schools.

But it should be ok to have a faith based prayer groups/clubs made of by students.

I can give you 8 or 9 good reasons that we should not be teaching Arabic numbers in US schools.

Seriously, this is pretty interesting and reveals how our bias leads. Sometimes. I have to admit that I have allowed this to happen to me a time or two, but I learned something from those instances. I hope the people taking the poll and those reading about it learn something too.

I voted ‘both’ because I cheated and read the hidden OP first.
Honestly I would have chosen the Arabic numbers, but not knowing Lamaitre, I would have not chosen #2.

We have other systems as well, the binary and the hex (I am not a computer specialist). I think Mesopotamians had a dodecal number system, the Aztec some other (19?). That we go by the 'Arabic?/Hindu' numerals is just convention. It can be any.

I voted 'both'. That said, LeMaitre's original version of the BB theory is probably NOT what should be taught. I'd prefer the later 'hot BB theory' of Gamow or the even more modern LCDM version.

Yes, the poll works off the biases people have because way too many don't know the origin of our numbers or the history of the BB theory. It plays off ignorance.

Well to be fair. It's the internet. The question polled face to face irl would work great. You would see a much higher rate of failure than polled here on RF. Even if you only asked the exact same people. As noted honestly post #10. Some people "cheated" and looked ahead at the spoiler. And I'm sure many people googled each answer to learn about it before they answered.

Cheating, as you call it, shows wisdom rather than dishonesty.
But we more "woke" folk saw thru the tricks immediately.
How can anyone not know of Arabic numerals, & Lemaitre,
a towering figure in physics & cosmology?
