Three Million, Mostly Uyghurs, in Some Form of Political ‘Re-Education’ in Xinjiang

Survey: Three Million, Mostly Uyghurs, in Some Form of Political ‘Re-Education’ in Xinjiang

Up to 3 million residents of northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), especially ethnic Uyghurs, may have been detained in political “re-education camps” or forced to attend “education sessions” for “de-radicalization” as of June, rights groups said Friday.

[...]

By applying their data at the local level to all of the XUAR, where more than 11.3 million Uyghurs make up around 48.5 percent of the population, the groups estimated that roughy 30 percent, or 3.3 million, may have been subjected to “re-education,” including about 10 percent, or 1.1 million, in detention camps and about 20 percent, or 2.2 million, in order day/evening re-education sessions.
China has 3.3 million people in concentration camps. And this is just in one province. In neighboring Tibet, there is said to be about another 3 million people who are imprisoned or in re-education camps.

It's starting to sound a lot like 1930 in China.

An anti -China organization will have its
own way of saying things.

I don't suppose it says anything about why
China is doing what it is doing.

I know Tibet is a touchy subject. They had an Asian culture celebration at our University and included the Tibetan flag among the others. Some Chinese students had a fit about it till it was taken down. I asked one of the students why it was such a big deal and he was a little cross with me for even asking. He made the comment to me that the Tibetan people were very aggressive.

It’s curious to me that as much as talk as there is in media stories about Islam, there is never any mention of the fact that the religion of the Uyghur people is Islam, and that there is an independence(?) movement of Uyghur people in Xinjiang that has been increasingly erupting in violence. Not to say that they use Islam as their excuse. I haven’t heard if they do or not.

Xinjiang borders on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. China is having the same problems as the rest of the world, with some kinds of Islam.

(edited to add a question mark to “independence”)

There is no close US equivalent but
it is vaguely comparable to a cultural
exhibit of the Americas, and Alabama
displayed a Confederate flag.

Tibet has a deeper history as integral
with the rest of China than the lands
taken from Mexico have with the USA.

As a cultural backwater (see Alabama :D )
Tibet-a feudal theocracy- was in serious need
of some political and cultural reform,
to bring it in line with the rest of China.

See US troops v governor of Arkansas
over allowing American students to
go to school, where the governor stands
on thd steps proclaiming, "they shall
not pass."

Annoyance with the USA and others fot
interfereing in Chinese internal affairs
is not surprising, and is really very
restrained.

IF China or other countries helped
the south or maybe just Alabama
secede, then armed and assisted,
calked theirs the legit govt of all
the USA...you see the idea?

Thanks for the Chinese history lesson Audie. I must admit to being reletively ignorant regarding the relationship between Tibet and China. So was Tibet once a part of China that broke away and was independent for a while or were they a sovereign country that was invaded by the Chinese? Not passing judgement, I seriously am limited on my knowledge regarding this issue.

Like I mentioned. I am limited on my knowledge on the relationship between China and Tibet. I saw "Seven years in Tibet" starring Brad Pitt. I don't know how historically accurate that movie is.

@David1967 ((With all its imperfections, I think Wikipedia is a good place to start, to learn about the history of a country or region.))

This is so true. China exterminated 60% of the population of Tibet, or approximately 2.3 million people during the Cultural Revolution and imprisoned another 5-6 million Tibetans. 6,000 monasteries were destroyed and the religious leaders were killed.

Also Tibet was never a part of China. Historically China was never a unified political identity unless it was under foreign domination.

Can a country invade itself?

China like some few other countries is far from
perfect, so it is not necessary to make up facts
or use inflammatory language to fluff it up.

Do you have a list of military operations that
could not be described as "brutal"?

Maybe one of these whatabouts-US Interventions

Nationalism requires "enemies"thus the rising tide
of anti Chinese rhetoric in the US, including
from among those who don't recognize their
role as trump-minions.

Do you have the courage to address your
comments to any particular person?

well you seem to support communists in all their excesses, but be extremely right wing in all other respects.

well you seem to support communists in all their excesses, but be extremely right wing in all other respects.

I love my country, and I dont care to see it unjustly
attacked, especially as part or a rising tide of
trump-inspired anti Chinese sentiment.

Elsewhere, you may have seen me say that China
is very far from perfect. And I detest the regime n
Beijing, as nearly anyone from Hong Kong does.

I really dont know where you get the idea of me
being "right wing". I have my own opinions, that
do not correspond to any american party lines.

Referring to me as "communist" is, well, I did
get a chuckle from that.

It will not actually happen, but it is fun to imagine,
at least, me taking you on a tour of my family's
businesses and real estate interests in HK.
Capitalism in action!

Thank you for posting directly to me. Maybe
some better understanding is in the works.

Thirty years have passed since the Tiananmen Square protests by Chinese students and workers for democracy, freedom of press and speech, and their massacre by the Chinese military and mass imprisonment.

1989 Tiananmen Square protests - Wikipedia

I hope the dissident students and workers who survived, are out of imprisonment, pardoned and leading normal lives.
