Do some people take life to serious?

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
To follow a spiritual path can sometimes lead a person to be to serious about life ( I been there)
But may it be that we need to stop being afraid of doing wrong, and if we do wrong learn from it, instead of becoming to serious about it and actually fear our own faults?

My newfound joy in life is seeing life in a more happy way (living in the moment). Laugh of my own "stuid" way of being from time to time, and when someone have fun toward me, to smile and have fun back :)

Life is actually really fun when you let go of the fear of doing something wrong.

I see it may not be about being afraid, but more disappointed with ones own weakness. I see that is good if it motivates within us the required change.

It is not so good, if it allows us to give into self and put the world before people.

There is no need to be anything but happy in this journey, as we can always do better.

Welcome back Amanaki. This is the kind of threads that I have been missing since you have been away.
Yes spiritual path can be serious but when you are following God, life is interesting and entertaining. I follow the path of satya-advaita so do not see that I do stupid things. Yesterday was interesting as I refrained from setting foot in the domain of Canada House where the mental health authorities were going to consider Medication Review on me. I figured that if they want to enforce an assessment on me it has to go through the due process of them identifying what I have done wrong that justifies the assessment. I told them that I follow my religion and so enforcing medication would be an act of religional discrimination. There has been no reply. I went and got my medications from the chemist this morning as that is what is indicated. Is this fun? You are right. It is fun but at the same time deadly serious. I need to restore my reputation as a sane person. So I will have to work out what my next strategy should be. That is just saying that fun and seriousness can go hand in hand.

How do you see it. Do you think you saying that you are out of RF for good and that you would never come back because of the kind of postings here from atheists and other religious followers was a mistake that you now regret or was this just part of the learning curve?

I think you are right and also think there is a good reason for it.

But I think you should care about whether you do something right or wrong and aim for doing right, but at the same time also be self aware enough to know that this is not always easy and sometimes one might lack knowledge or experience in doing the right thing, so mistakes happens. But if you can say to yourself that doing a specific thing is not really your strongest side, you can much easier ask others for advice, or simply try the best that you can, and if it fails, well as you say you learned from it. But I think the key is to be self aware as that helps you to not take things more serious than you have to when they occasionally fails.

Having a happy approach to life make sense, because we have no idea what we are doing here in the first place or what our purpose is. So aiming at doing things that makes us happy, at least you got that and as you say it makes things more fun. So worry about important things, if someone makes fun of you in a mean way and you can't make them stop and it continue to annoy you, its probably not worth spending any time on them anyway. But again if someone makes fun of your ideas of how you approach life, I think you have a point in not taking it all to serious, because again we don't know why we are here, so your guess is as good as theirs. But it doesn't mean that one should be ignorant about reasons for, how one approaches or chooses to live life, but again be self aware of whether living or doing certain things actually make sense. And being to serious about it make it hard to do that, as we tend to get easily offended about things that we take serious.

So enjoy life and spend time on things that really matters and care about them, but be open that you might be wrong and have to adjust. Which in it self can be fun and interesting as well as you expand your world view.

Thank you for your kind words :) That means a lot you know.

I needed a time off (i thought for a longer time) To find a more happy part of my life, that had become to serious and to much negativity going on. But now i find love and kindness even in the darkest corners :)

Hope all is well with you

I have had a tough time at Religious Forums myself with not being able to get myself understood but I would never seriously consider voluntarily terminating posting in these Forums for the reason that one learns and exposes truths through the process of this kind of enagagement. That is fun but also serious. This is because if one has a message for mankind one must not lose track of ones convictions and make oneself heard. Cultivating Buddhism is a serious message. That is just my way of encouraging you to continue posting here.:)

Yes i agree with you Shantanu. Sometimes we get a message in the face that can feel hurtful. But i think we can mannage it and find that sometimes it is needed to hear that we are strange, or even someone calling us liars or stupid, But maybe they only mirror them self?

One needs beliefs to form the framework of our existence. Every person is guided by his beliefs, whether delusional or stupid or true and factual. We try and strive for a factual basis of understanding. That is serious business but also fun in the sense that it does not really matter. We all are surviving one way or the other. Longevity is not dependent on whether one has enlightenment.

Everyone takes life seriously when their life is being threatened.

I think there are a lot of people in the world who FEEL as if their life is being threatened when their egos conflate their "life", with their "self", and their "self" with righteousness. For a lot of humans, for the "self" to be found 'in the wrong' is for it to die in the eyes of their egos. So that being right becomes a 'life and death' proposition. And that's why they take the issues of 'right and wrong' so seriously.

So much agree with you :) The ego does make it difficult to see the truth as it really is.

As I see it, it's judgment of self and judgment of others that leads one to take life too seriously and this leads to unnecessary suffering. Once one is able to accept oneself and others for who they are, one will reduce or eliminate this suffering.

I have found that the Four Agreements helpful in affecting this. They had a profound effect on my life once I understood them and began living by this Toltec wisdom...

1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Some people? I would say lots of people. Serious people are draining to be around. Attempts at humour or lightening things up go unnoticed, or are sloughed off. One wonders why to bother at all.

As for self-reflection, a few simple guidelines (to add to what Salix wrote above) have aided me. I'm also capable of getting stuck in an endless circle of thinking/debate that I know of as an intellectual grid.
Consider the source. People are people, you have observation, judgement to see wisdom, why listen to fools?
Consider the frequency. It's okay to be depressed once a year, but not okay once a day.
Cultivate a craft. Doing something physically, that involves thought, but not intellect, keeps the mind active, but refreshes it.

There are lots and lots of philosophical statements like 'Be Here Now' , 'Let go the Rope', 'Practice Detachment' and more that are useless unless you can actually do it. It they're just words, processed into the memory, they are more ineffectual dross. Do what works for you.

This place, RF, is not the best place for lightening up, although some people do have a knack for it. Real Life is easier, as body language, physical smiling, effective pausing are added to it.

Regardless, interesting discussion.
