‘President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed into law a "sovereign internet" bill which will allow Russian authorities to isolate the country's internet, a move decried by rights groups. ’

‘Thousands of people recently rallied in Russia against this and other bills that critics say aim to restrict information and communication online.

Separately, Putin in March signed controversial laws that allow courts to fine and briefly jail people for showing disrespect towards authorities, and block media for publishing "fake news".

The laws are part of an ongoing Kremlin clampdown on media and internet freedoms that has seen people jailed for sharing humorous memes.’

Governmental control of information. :(

Great for the folks in power. Not so great for the folks who aren't.

Coming to a country near you?

Don't say things like that when you don't know much about Russia.

This is a clear sign Putin is tightening his grip and headed for dictatorship. Revolution is a reasonable outcome to this action.

Guess who has Putin-envy. You know, the one who rants "fake news" repeatedly.

What....you mean the left in the USA who call anybody who does NOT toe the party line 'fascists,' 'racists,' 'hate signalers' and other delightful names?

The problem with calling fake news 'fake news' isn't that saying so is false. It's that saying so is true...and the left hates to have that stuff pointed out.

As well, it's not the conservatives who want to pass laws that limit free speech, now, is it?

WHICH side wants to go after 'hate speech?" WHICH side encouraged the IRS to target conservative groups?

eh? Whatever happened to the attitude Beatrice Hall attributed to Voltaire:

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.?

If we do not hold to this principle, eventually none of us will be able to say anything without offending someone, and without some form of government retaliation.

Oh.
wait.

Forget the 'eventually' bit. That's happening now.

Unless the Russians are much like Americans; easily duped, manipulated, and placated.
Maybe they believe that Putin is simply "Making Russia Great Again."

Well it might be something you would fall for.

But I would be ready to arm myself should this happen in the U.S.

This is a good thing, and more countries should do it now that America is trying to push its weight around in cyberspace with Trump's new "National Cyber Strategy," which is what this law is really trying to counter.

As someone who supports free speech and doesn't dismiss unfavorable reporting as "fake news", hardly.

I would be ready to arm myself should this happen in the U.S.
Good luck taking out a tank with a Walmart shotgun. Besides, I would bet good money that if it did happen in the U.S., the president behind it would have the gun crowd in their pocket.

Nope you consume fake news like its mothers milk and never question it.

What makes you think the tank won't be on my side?
