Social media

This guy makes some pretty good points. Should we get away from social media(or at least do less of it), or are we too far in now? Thoughts?

I think we should do less of it but ultimately some unrest is caused by underlying human rights violations which need to be addressed. So I think that some of that unrest is inevitable and social media is only facilitating what needs to happen to find a greater peace in which huiman rights abuses can't be swept under the rug so easily.

I avoid social media. I do have a Facebook page, but only check it when prompted by family to view their posts, pictures, etc. I'm just not a sharing guy when it comes to my personal/private life, and have no interest in that of other's.

I have a Facebook page for my business, but not one for personal. Rf is about as close to social media as I get.

I see this happen a lot as well. People go out hiking but can not get their noses out of their phones. My brother's family was really hooked on social media and phones until he cut all the phones but his own. His children freaked out but do not care now. These days all of his children play 3-4 sports per year in some sort of league and barely touch computers and such.

I had Facebook for about a month back in 2010, but I dropped it.

Part of the problem that I've seen is not the social media companies themselves, but all the other media companies shamelessly promoting it. I go to links for articles, and usually see the "share" icons on the page for the usual suspects - Facebook, Twitter, etc. I listen to the radio or watch TV shows and hear them endlessly prattle on about "check out our Facebook page" and so on.

The worst of all is when our local paper stopped allowing comments through their own comment board system, and instead required it to be done through one's Facebook account. They justified this by claiming there were too many anonymous trolls commenting, although a few of those "trolls" also seemed like they had too much inside information about the inner workings of our local government. It appears they did what they did to silence those people and cover up apparent corruption - which is the exact opposite of what a news organization is supposed to do.

There are other news sites which require readers to comment through their Facebook, Twitter, or Google accounts. It puts people in a position where, to have any access or voice at all, they must have a social media account. There are many sites where you can't just sign up with an e-mail address alone.

I don't really blame Facebook or other social media platforms as much as I blame their enablers all across society.

There's a small irony in asking us to watch a video from one of the most infamous social media sites in existence. I almost never watch smucktoob videos. Not making an exception here.

In any case, I learned some important lessons about so-called "social" media many years ago. There were some personal things that happened, and I also saw the writing on the wall with respect to what these platforms were really doing. They do not exist to provide a public service, they exist to collect information on you and sell it to the highest bidder. They are not there to help you connect with your friends, they are there to invasively spy in your private life and profit off it in any way that they can. They provide nothing that more traditional methods cannot, and in most cases, a great deal less.

Good point.

Scary huh. Now imagine what will happen if government decides to use this information for nefarious reasons. Also, I do not understand why many people will air very personal issues and grievances for all the world to see. Another thing; thieves love social media. Just last night on my local news channel a local band was out of state to shoot a music video. Thieves saw this on their facebook page and used the opportunity to rob their home of their custom instruments and other belongings.

We don't have to imagine it. This has already happened. See: the last presidential election in the United States.

It's not so hard to understand; humans are social animals. I'd hazard to say all humans feel a basic need to share and be understood by other humans. The way in which they do so varies, with equally varying degrees of wisdom and discretion.

Something like this can (and does) happen without social media, though. There are better examples of how such tools have been used to organize crime than this one.
