Some people posthumously leave their body to science - would you give your data when alive?

I heard this today on NPR - a study by Google and medical universities trying to further the predictive analytic capabilities of computers and help people in the process. The story mentioned that some people signed on to provide their data just like people from Massachusetts did for the Framingham heart study or the Nurses Health study.

I wondered how many would be willing to consider giving their personal data to a for profit corporation if only in the promise of helping humankind

No, I am an organ donor though to help out people that need transplants when I die. But after whatever useable organs is harvested my body is to be cremated. So no donation for scientific study. Unless they willing to pay my family a hefty sum for my corpse, but considering I have disowned all family no luck there even if it was the case.

This doesn’t strike me as anything particularly unusual. It’s medical research and that commonly requires volunteer subjects who inevitably give intimate clinical data to the researchers. The only key difference here is that the cohort is generally healthy individuals rather than ones who already have an identified medical condition or illness.

I’ve both provided data in this kind of scenario (albeit anonymised in that case) and also worked on IT systems managing patient data for research purposes so I wouldn’t have any major concern about this kind of thing in general. It’s really just a case of knowing who is involved and trusting them with your data. I can understand people being cautious but I wouldn’t be any more concerned than I am about the thousands of other ways private companies get access to personal data about me.

Medical ethics says the data should be anonymous, i personally would not trust google to adhere to that.

Also commercial companies are in it for profit, if i did offer my data i would want payment.

It reminds me of the cold calling phase of a few years ago "We are conducting a survey, would you answer some questions". My first response was "Where do i send the bill for my time?"

The reply was always confusion, mumbled excuses or a hang up.

I have though, provided anonymous data to the NHS (british national health service) and CPAM (french equivalent) which which may be used for research.

Nope. I would need a contract limiting the use of my data and insuring a level of privacy. Data trading is an old trade predating the levels social media use of data in the present. Besides a promise from something, corporate entity, and people I do not know at all means nothing to me.

Why wouldn’t trust Google? What about the universities involved (who will also benefit economically, and more directly than Google at that)? What if it was a company you’d not really heard of before, positively or negatively, say Verily for example?

Also commercial companies are in it for profit, if i did offer my data i would want payment.
I’ll offer my opinion on that statement but it’ll cost you.

Google has already been fined €1.5 billion for antitrust violations, my view is someone only gets one chance, if they screw up once then they will again.

I also stated "Also commercial companies are in it for profit" i think that answers all your what abouts.

You are welcome to your opinion, im not buying

So you’d trust a company that hasn’t been caught doing anything wrong to your knowledge? And given the web of corporations and cross-ownerships in business these days and the various legal and social issues they all fall foul of sometimes, aren’t you excluding pretty much everything? A Google subsidiary almost certainly already holds personal data about you somewhere.

Not really, that was in relation to your demanding payment, which implies you would otherwise trust them. I just think you’re opening yourself to being manipulated by what you read about a few companies in the media rather than investigating and considering each case individually on its merits.
