Actually i prefer fresh goats cheese.
I like aged cheeses a bit more. Recently I bought a cheese from France. It was Comte' cheese. Very sneaky stuff. I ate a small slice, and mentally shrugged my shoulders with a 'meh' since it was a rather bland cheese. But the taste lingered. And then I found myself cutting off another slice, and another. It kept calling me back.

We eat comte often. Very mild but versatile, handy for cheese sandwiches and it cooks well, good on flans, grated and grilled on top of baked potatoes or even humble Welsh rarebit.

A sad day for the cultural heritage of France, Europe and the world by extension.

I was in that cathedral just 4 months ago. Sad to think and realize that many of the enormous paintings will be ruined.
You can rebuild a roof and it will be fine mostly.

But you can't really redo 15th century masterpieces paiinted by the likes of Michaelangelo.
Some might hopefully be restoreable. But I fear total loss for many of them.

Many relics were saved, it is believed the firefighter who was injured was hurt when he re-entered the blaze to save the crown of thorns. Also some had previously been removed for restoration.

I am pretty sure all the frescoes and painting will be restored. Surely not original but they will become part of the turbulent history of notre dame which has survived (not always intact) wars and revolution.

As a matter of interest, and please correct me if i am wrong but i dont think there were any Michaelangelo paintings on notre dame.

I don't think there are any idd.
But I don't know whose paintings they are. That's why I said "the likes of Michaelangelo" :D
Surely there will be works there from similar legendary artists, I'ld guess.

It is amazing how often buildings burn down during renovations.
You would thing they would take extra special precautions.
Especially when flames are in use, and they should have a watch stand by for a few hours afterward, which is the danger time.
What ever the cost it would be far less than a restoration.

In the antique machinery world, it's also true that we like things in original condition.
But when things are damaged & repaired, this becomes part of the history. And
some repairs, particularly vintage ones using older techniques, actually enhance
the history of the artifact.

I would have given that a like and a winner too if i could

Engineered lumber (a custom glulam) would work.
And where visible, a faux finish would blend right in.
It would be an authentic repair....for the 21st century.

The real trick with repairs which are of a different technology
is to ensure compatibility, & avoid unforeseen problems.
It's why one no longer repairs ancient masonry work with
modern rebar (which is incompatible with ancient systems).

A fire extinguisher near the floor which reaches 6 feet isn't going to be reaching a rooftop or putting out an inferno. Even then, many fire extinguishers aren't configured to handle electrical fires like what was apparently the case here.

My comment was in connection to the reporter who said he was there at the 'start' of the fire.
Sounds as if No one was really there at the start of the original point of burning.
My comment was made before it was reported that the computer sent the inspectors to a wrong or different location.
That gave the fire the extended time to burn before the original location was located.
Was it verified electrical fire or ____________
