Is it right that Israel Folau should get the sack for his 'Hell awaits gay people' comments?

The Australian rugby player is to be sacked after a social media post in which he also said "drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters" should "repent" because "only Jesus saves".

In a statement, Rugby Australia said the post "does not represent the values of the sport and is disrespectful to members of the rugby community", adding that its integrity unit had been "engaged on the matter".

Israel Folau has made similar posts before and managed to escape punishment.

What do you think about his sacking?

" 'Israel Folau fails the NRL's inclusiveness culture, which is a policy strongly supported by the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC),' " said ARLC chairman Peter Beattie.

They should require him to be polite when he is working, but they shouldn't be telling him what to think.

What? Me worry?

Uhh...it's Rugby...you expect a Rugby player to be "...polite when he's working..."?

I have never watched Rugby, but yes they can of course require that. They're sacking him because of something he tweeted about his religion not because of something he said on the field. They're being Thought Police.

Of course people have the right to express their opinion, but employers also have the right to sever ties with those who violate their policies.
What if I had a company that was right-wing oriented and I sacked people for saying gay people should be allowed to marry? There'd be hell on and people would tell me I am being this that and the other; if people are allowed to say gays can marry, people should be allowed to say that hell awaits them, otherwise it just becomes an echo chamber for leftists and isolates conservatives.

I don't think that's enough. Isn't that what many Abrahamic religions subsects believe today.

As a professional player he is a public face for the organization, so it's not unreasonable for them to expect people to behave accordingly. They're big boys who should have enough sense to know when to hold their tongues. Gotta have standards.

I think you guys missed the point biggedly...a Rugby player's "work" is smashing into big guys and trying to jerk a ball out of their hands. I would be surprised if anyone would be expected to be polite in those circumstances. Sometimes you need to stop taking yourself so seriously and enjoy the ride....

If your company had a policy against expressing views that conflict with the companies conservative, religious views while one is representing the company, sure.
That aside, some views are more valid and respectable than others based on how rational and substantiated they are.

So you're saying he sent those tweets out while chasing balls around and rolling around on the field? As a professional player and public figure, he still represents the league off the field.
