Should we have to use pronouns?

Do you think everyone should have to use gender pronouns if asked? Should they be enforced by law? Why/why not?

Misgendering a person is disrespectful, so only misgender a person if you want to express disrespect.

It's not generally illegal to be a jerk, but being a continual, unapologetic jerk often isn't conducive to staying employed.

This is mostly a matter of courtesy. I had one friend who came out as transgender and asked me to start using "she" instead of "he." Now I'll admit that I slipped up a few times as old habits die hard, but I apologised and corrected myself when it happened.

Why would I insist on continuing referring to her as male? It seems a petty and unpleasant thing to do for no good reason.

One thing I never could understand is this: We have pronouns and proverbs, but why don't have any proadjectives?

Sure I will use someone's preferred pronouns if asked and informed. But to enforce it by law is too heavy handed. Your getting into the realm of thought policing when you make laws enforcing the type of speech you are allowed/not allowed.

No, people should be free to have their own opinions , including the opinion that they don’t agree with another’s gender identity.

One can disagree without deliberately being rude. Of course we use the pronoun "it" for those who choose to be so.

Absolutely not as a matter of enforcement.

Asking out of respect to use pronouns would be a different story*.

(If the person isn't acting like a real ***hole to you.)

Yes. To do otherwise is a deliberate attack on said person. As such, it should be enforced by law.

Well, the words 'he' and 'she' are part of the language. There are extensions to *gender neutral* pronouns, like 'sie' or 'zie'.

Trying to dictate language use by law is a huge mistake.

Could you be more specific concerning what you want to discuss?
