What Really Moves You?

Over this many years, perhaps like most people, I have moved through stages, "Valleys of Death", and Lofty Heights.

Perhaps in the last decade, the views of others about belief have grown less and less important. Often lately, I feel that the pundits of any belief system seem to do little to make me curious about their belief systems.

Speak to me! Are there any who really work to have their belief system change them so they can more fully believe in a Creator. I don't care which one.

Right now, I find the soundtrack from "Arrival" to inspire and draw my soul more than anything.

Certain things move me, some are unique to my mindset, some, i am sure, move others as much as me.

Things like the joy of giving birth to a child, seeing that child's successes or the death of a close friend.

To the more mundane, strong friendships, really good food, exquisite sex, good music.

Being emotionally moved is not the domain of a creator but of the human condition.

I think what is in our heart moves us.
I also think God knows what is in our heart, and he lets us go in the direction our heart is taking us. If he sees that our heart is humble, he becomes actively involved in helping us find him.
2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of Jehovah are roving about through all the earth to show his strength in behalf of those whose heart is complete toward him. . . .
He draws those to him - John 6:44

Great art. Often I find it in music, sometimes in sculpture and painting, and occasionally in theater and dance. I think humans are at their best when they are creating and sharing works of art. And their best can truly be MAGNIFICENT!

People choose according to the highest inclinations of their hearts.

But what makes something your highest treasure? I think God puts the love of truth and the love of the light in one's heart. I don't think it's there 'all along'

I think God IS that love of truth in our hearts that drives us to experience the spirit of existence rather than just the physicality of it. God is the divine within the natural.

I don't understand: Why is believing in a Creator important?

To my way of thinking, if there is really a 'someone' who created the universe, it appears to be well beyond my ability to apprehend or comprehend...It is simply many orders of magnitude to large for me to perceive or conceive. And it seems ludicrous that such an entity would care whether or not I believed in it; indeed, it is beyond me to understand how such an entity would or could be aware of me...or of anyone...and would or could care about something so inconsequential as belief in it...

What moves me? The beauty and ugliness of nature, the wonder of the universe such as I can perceive and conceive of it, and the astounding heights and depths that me and my fellow humans and other kinfolk can achieve in our limited existences.

That moves me. It moves me to want to see and do more, it moves me to treat humans and our other-than-human kinfolk better, to be more understanding, and more compassionate in the conduct of my own life.

'Believe more fully in a Creator"? No. But I do practice at trusting in the idea of a benevolent existential source and purpose.

I am so easily entertained this moved me. So much so that this is the second time I have shared it.

Amazing Anagrams

Dormitory (I saw my son's college room OMG! and the big trash can was right outside the door!) = Dirty room.

The Morse Code = Here come dots

Slot machines = Cash lost in 'em (there's nothing truer than that, imo)

Snooze alarms = Alas! No more z's

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
When i see virtues at work in people, i am moved to consider a source of those virtues.

When people are virtuous, that is very inspiring and other worldly. I consider that perhaps virtue is eternal.

And when i comprehend all the virtues altogether it all seems so overwhelmingly simple and beautiful. That beauty forces me to consider that life is meant to be.

And if life is meant to be then perhaps there is a place of infinite unending life.

I avoid the notion of Godhood, because it seems so self centered to me, and i find no experience of it in reality. Everyone is chasing a supreme being. I am chasing after the qualities of being that make free the soul.

As far as a creator goes, i see it more as a spiritual force not owned or possessed by any single being.

As to why we exist in a place of rampant evils i have not the slightest idea why that is so. I can imagine that the forces of good and evil have been at war since many eternities past.

If life were ideal we would all be born angels, but this is not so. And suffering and hardship fall on everybody regardless of who they are. Not many people go through life unscathed.

Question Everything
Experience changes our beliefs more than anything I think. The difference between wishful thinking, vs. deep down knowing what is real or not. I guess seek to have good experiences - spend time outside, listen to good music, travel, talk to people - surround yourself with goodness, and you will believe in goodness. Be the change you want to see in the world and all that.

I grew up being taught about God, and more or less simply assumed his existence. However, I have had experiences that have so moved me that I feel very close to our Creator.

They happen most commonly in connection with sounds, since I'm of an auditory modality. The climax of a symphony, the sound of birds in the tree, listening to children playing, the canting of the Shema.

It is also common for this to happen in response to the greatness of Nature and its awesome design. To stand beside a giant redwood, to sea the sea stretch out forever, to see the snowcapped mountains in the distance, to view the beauty of a flower strewn meadow in the springtime.... How can I not see the hand of the Creator?

But really these experiences can happen any time, for any reason.

1. They are transcendent, and feel realer than real
2. They never last
3. There is nothing I can do to MAKE them happen
4. I come away from them feeling as though I've learned something on the deepest level. When I am in the middle of one, I feel as those I have woken up.
5. There is an overwhelming sense of harmony with God and his universe, a kind of oneness with it all. It is as though the entire universe is dancing, and I am dancing my part along with it, all in one glorious act of worship. Yikes, that just does not do them justice -- which brings me to my last point:
6. I cannot put them into words or communicate them with others. (The Tao which can be expressed is not the eternal Tao.) In fact, if I even try, others inevitably butcher it in the translation. I therefore keep them to myself.

Whether you call these religious experiences or mystical experiences, I can read the writing or poetry of other mystics and instantly know they have experienced the same thing, whether they are the Baal Shem Tov, or a Zen story.

As my tagline says, those who do not see God everywhere see him nowhere.

"An angel of G‑d appeared to [Moses] in a flame of fire amidst the thorn-bush; and he saw that, behold, and the bush burned with fire, but was not consumed" (Exodus 3:2).

When my mind has doubts, the memory of these experiences sustain me. They give substance to my walk with God. They are the kavanah behind my observance.
