"Secret Video Shows Kentucky Biology Teacher Promoting Christianity to Students"

"A high school pre-AP Biology teacher in Kentucky has been accused of promoting Christianity in the classroom, and you don’t have to take my word for it, because there’s video evidence.

Where there are apparently multiple instances of this happening, one particular incident was caught on tape. It began when the teacher showed this wordless one-minute video of the M51 Whirlpool Galaxy in which, from a distance, it appears as if there’s a cross at the center of it. (It’s nothing of the sort.)

Then, to hammer the point home, the same teacher showed students a video of Pastor Louie Giglio explaining that the image is somehow proof of “Jesus everywhere.” (Giglio is the same science-ignorant Christian who claimed that the structure of a laminin molecule also showed God’s existence.)

And if you think there’s no way a teacher would be dumb enough to show this to students, a girl in the class recorded the entire thing:"

"The girl’s mother gave even more context to the situation on the Blasphemy in the Bluegrass podcast. Another student apparently ratted out her daughter to the teacher, saying she had recorded that particular lesson. The teacher asked the girl to delete the video. She said she would. She didn’t. And that’s why we have the recording you see above.

The same girl told her vice principal about it earlier this week… and that led to him fighting over the phone with her father about how the girl wasn’t allowed to record in the classroom. (The VP didn’t address the proselytizing.)"

Obviously these actions are indefensible. They should indicate more though than just that some people are lame brained or have no compunctions about breaking laws. You are looking at someone trying to protect students from a perceived threat. The law is failing to change that. That doesn't mean the laws are not needed. It means that people need time to come to grips with with topic and differentiate it from cultural warfare.

While I definitely condemn this teacher's actions and am glad they were exposed, I'm not a big fan of the kiddies bringing smart phones to school (really though, the only phone a little turd should "need" is perhaps a flip phone for emergencies). Aside from being a distraction, a tool for cheating, etc. I can see spoiled brats bullying other kids based on the brand and model they carry, just like they do shoes. And on that note, I think there should be school uniforms.

There is obviously a perception of cultural warfare. The teacher and administration are trying to hide what they are doing from the authorities. The students are mostly in on it and their parents probably, too. They believe their culture is under attack from forces allied with the government through public schooling. In other words they believe the government is trying to deep-six their culture and beliefs. That's a practical, realistic bit of knowledge to take from this.

When was it decided that the cross was the universal sign of Jesus? Why not find a fish shape, or something else? Is every cross shape you come upon placed there by God as a religious sign?

Is the Virgin Mary on a tortilla a sign of God? Krishna on a chapatti? Jesus in the clouds? ...and who's face is that on Mars, anyway?

A teacher with no skill in logic or critical analysis has no business teaching. Magical Thinking should not be part of the curriculum.

They try so hard to prove that the God, they have created in THEIR image, exists, they fail to ever find the God who is right in front of them. It’s just human nature, most people have to believe that what they believe is right. The only difference with the ‘lame-brain Christians’, is the self righteousness that comes with it.

Sadly the requirements of knowledge on one's subject is woefully lacking in the U.S.. I met a student that was studying to become a physics teacher in high school.. He had no knowledge of calculus at all. Now one may not need calculus if one taught "cookbook Physics", i.e. physics taught without any deeper understanding of it than memorizing formulas, but excuse me for thinking that a teacher should have a working knowledge of the subject he is engaged in.

He had no knowledge of calculus at all. I took calculus in HS. But this person, who was in college studying to be a physics teacher of all things, had no education at all in calculus and was surprised when I asked him about it. I simply can't see teaching even high school physics without at least a few quarters of calculus.
