Creation of the earth and heaven in Quran

In one of the verses of Quran, it is written God created the earth and the Heavens in six days. How long it took Him to create the earth, and how long the heavens?
How would six days is compatible with scientific findings? Big bang, and evolution?

How did you deside or how did you know it is not to be taken literally?
If it contradicts with logic and science, then you decide it must be allegorical?

At KAUST in Arabia they have interactive exhibits on the geology of the Arabian peninsula and how it has changed over millions of years. At each station there is a brass plaque with a creation verse from the Koran. I don't think there's a lot of angst over the science versus the creation story.

There is because, for a 'Day' to exist, first there must be a Sun, and earth to rotate. That is how a 'Day' exist. But if the earth and sun did not exist, how can it be said, it was created in six days? When there was no days yet!

Oh I think there were days and nights a million years ago and earth revolved around the sun even then.

No. Read from a reliable source. And of course it makes perfect sense. It's the same with the Bible.

The same dumb argument that has been responded to billions of times. The word "day" is the translation of the word "yaum" in Arabic which means both 1- "a 24 hour day" or 2- "a period of time".

The word day has the exact same 2 meaningings in English. This is how day is defined in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary:

1- a twenty-four-hour period as a unit of time, reckoned from one midnight to the next and corresponding to a rotation of the earth on its axis. ▶the time between sunrise and sunset. ▶Astronomy a single rotation of a planet in relation to its primary.
2- a particular period of the past

So the verse is to be taken literally in both the Quran and the Bible and it means the earth and the heavens were created in six days (i.e. six periods of time).

Case closed.

That shouldn't be a stumbling block.. In the Koran there are some 30 allegorical descriptions of heaven, but scholars tell me the bottom line is paradise is to be in the presence of God.

We don't know exactly but there's some indications in the Quran :

22.47 Yet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But Allah will not fail in His promise. Verily a Day in the sight of thy Lord is like a thousand years of your reckoning.

32.5 He rules (all) affairs from the heavens to the earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day the space whereof will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning.

70.4 The angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years

(according to Ibn Abbas it's during the Hour)

A day 1,000 / 50,000 years :

https://islamqa.info/en/answers/2272/is-a-day-with-allaah-one-thousand-years-or-fifty-thousand-years

Also the perception for humans is different the day of resurrection/in the tomb :

30.55 On the Day that the Hour (of reckoning) will be established, the transgressors will swear that they tarried not but an hour: thus were they used to being deluded!

10.45 One day He will gather them together: (it will be) as if they had tarried but an hour of a day: they will recognise each other: assuredly those will be lost who denied the meeting with Allah and refused to receive true guidance.

20.104 We know best what they will say, when their leader most eminent in Conduct will say: "Ye tarried not longer than a day!"

23.112 He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?"
23.113 They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account."
23.114 He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little― if ye had only known!

We have different mesures here : The day in the sight of God, the day of the resurrection, a day in the tomb, a day for the Angels/Holy Spirit to God, the perception of a day for a believer and a non believer

The Hour will last 50,000 years but it will be easier for the believer and his perception will be different again.

That day will be 50 000 years long, after which a person will be admitted into Paradise or cast into Hell.” (Abu Dawood)

" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The Day of Resurrection for the believers will be like the length of time between noon and afternoon prayers.” (Abu Huraira)

And yet, a lot of muslims oppose evolutionary biology quite fiercely.

Really? I have never run across that..

You need to come out more.

To name just one example, search "dawkins islamic school" on youtube. It's at an islamic school in England.

But, KSA does have outstanding universities for minerals and petroleum as well as geology.

Likely because they can't afford not to, considering it's literally their main source of income and THE reason for their wealth.

Is this the only school Dawkins attended?

You're going to have to ask him that.
In any case, I gave you just one example.

Here's another: Adnan Oktar and his "atlas of creation". A book that was distributed free of charge to plenty of schools and moqsues around the world wich contains a mega rant against mainstream biology and "darwinism".

I have toured several schools in Arabia, maybe there's an issue in the UK.

Adnan Oktar (born 2 February 1956), also known as Harun Yahya, is a Turkish author as well as an Islamic creationist. In 2007, he sent thousands of unsolicited copies of his book, The Atlas of Creation, which advocates Islamic creationism, to American scientists, members of Congress, and science museums.
