We're all just cowards

Tranquil Servant

Was M.I.A for a while
A lot of the time when I'm reading posts and replies on this website of forums, I think to myself why are ppl so hostile?o_O:confused:Aren't we all just afraid...... From Atheists who believe in science and in what they see or can be proven, with all their facts, scientific theories, formulas, charts, diagrams and super long words!:anguished:. Are they not afraid?..... afraid to believe in something that can't be proven.... afraid to be wrong..... afraid that one day they will die but have no hope for a "better place".... afraid that if they do die and a God does exist, no amount of proof or scientific words will help them.
AND Religious ppl who have faith driven beliefs. Who believe someone or something bigger than them has all the answers or who sometimes self-righteously believe, they have all the answers. Are they not afraid?.....Afraid of questioning their beliefs.... afraid to be wrong... afraid to defend believing in something that society has placed such a stigma on.....afraid that this is it and after death, there is nothing else...
At the end of the day we are all cowards and no one person is better than anyone else so ppl shouldn't be so hostile towards one another dang it!!(taking me outta my "tranquil" character!):expressionless:....
Lol! Jk!:p....
BUT seriously, we're all cowards.

When it comes to the outcome of this lifetime as a buddhist i can say i am not afraid. Because the answer to the answer is in my own hands, if i can shred my own faults and become one who do little to no fault then there is nothing to fear. and the teachings are there to guide me how to do it. But it is all up to me to do so.

I can summarize this by saying each are looking for answers outside themselves. So they need it to be right. Someone else can't be right too in a mode of thinking that sees the world divided between true and false statements. It leads to black and white thinking, which always places themselves outside of the truth. "Where's your evidence?," cries the atheist. "God's word tells me the truth," cries the believer.

Neither understands that Truth doesn't need scientific evidence, or to be told to you by an outside religious authority in order to be recognized. It is subjectively apprehended. Once recognized, from within the person, Truth can then be seen and understood in many different ways.

We should all strive to reach a state of impeccability if, for nothing better reason, than the freedom it gives us to find out who we really are.

That fear is just infantile ego that is incapable of imagining or understanding a world/universe without yourself in it. Get over it, the world/universe does not care if you live or die. No fear here.

Why should we be afraid to believe. I think you will find that most of the atheists on here did at one time believe.
If your god exists and we are sent to hell...aren't we very brave to face it unafraid?

I'm not an Atheist. But i think the perceived hostility you observe from Atheists is not a result of fear. I think it is the result of world history, current events, and bad behavior in the name of Religion.

But i think you're right that fear exists in all of us. It's something universal; something all of us have in common.

It seems to me that for all of us, life provides an ongoing stream of opportunities to choose love over fear.

Just a comment that theists fear more the consequences of non-belief, or the alternatives than atheists nor agnostics. Atheists and agnostics just have a very high preference to a factual explanations for the nature of our physical existence. It is a relevant point that the beliefs and nature of ancient scripture has a very low explanatory power concerning the the reality of the nature of our physical existence.

BUT seriously, we're all cowards.
If I were on a beach, and I saw the sea recede, I would do two things - 1. run, and 2. shout a warning to people, as I go.
Surely we don't consider a person who takes such action, to be a coward. Hopefully we consider that person wise. They put their knowledge and understanding to good use.

Some people grabbed their camera, and start going toward the waters - snapping away, and hostility defending their actions. :(

Of these, some...
a) lack knowledge, but try to defend what they don't know.
b) have doubts but still try to defend what they are uncertain about.

Perhaps (a) and (b) are whom you are thinking of, as cowards, but the ones who acts wisely - let's call them (c), without hesitation, and based on knowledge, surely demonstrates, not cowardice, but unwavering courage.

Both (a) and (b) are afraid to listen, because they want no one to interrupt them getting their pictures.
However, (c) is not afraid, because they are fully convinced they have solid evidence for what they are acting on.
They are not afraid to question what the know and understand, because they have done this, and more.

They are confident that they will get to safety :), and they can only envision what will happen to those "photographers".

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
I dont fear death, nor ceasing to exist. I loathe those things with every inch of me. But i embrace the peace of dying someday even though i loath its consequences.

So if i cease to exist, i have learned to be at peace about it, because not one thing can be done about it.

The only thing to fear is the unbearable torment of physical suffering. That is fearsome. But it shouldnt stop anyone from living, or doing what they must do. If i ever get to that point again, and i have no possibility to heal, then noble euthanasia would work .

Sometimes spiritual suffering is worse then any physical suffering. Spiritual in the sense of love, and also relationship suffering.

I suppose if i were a real bad criminal there would be a lot more to fear.

Fear is a normal healthy thing. It brings out courage and appreciation. Being afraid is probably the worst thing though. Worse then fear is being afraid. I make a distinction there because fear can be overcome, and controlled. But being afraid is running away from something that prevents you from living.

Nonetheless id say everybody feels things like these. Fear and being afraid. But a coward is worse.

A coward chooses to do bad things and takes easy ways out of things when they own something of a problem they never take responsibility. They willfully let people down in a time of need. They blame others when they are at fault and they know it.

Often true thoughts are covered up. It tales a particular experience to figure it out, or shed some light. I remember a conversation I had with a pastor/volunteer ambulance driver in my youth. He arrived on the scene of a 2 car head on collision. Emergency vehicles, police, maybe 20 or so people who figures thay'd be able to deal with it. He said for the first half hour he was the only one who could do anything.

An otherwise confident friend diagnosed with cancer at age 27 told me she just froze up, and put her total trust in the medical system, and more or less shut down her emotional system.

Who really knows if they're afraid or not? I trust that some people truly aren't, but doubt others.
