America is at once a placed suffused with cowboy culture which it claims an integral part of the toxic masculinity independent and industrious spirit and again would be offended that our cowboy culture is mostly just a wish fulfilling power fantasy where we take Mexican ranch culture and add way more guns and whitewashing to it than there ever was.
Looking at the above, it seems that much of our culture is about hating our culture & even denying that we have any.
But where else can find this kind of greatness....

Our decision to expatriate was not based on cost of living. That, like the excellent weather here, was a bonus. We left America because we didn't want to be a part of it any longer. The decision was made during the 2002-03 rush to war in Iraq based on false reports of WMD, and the depiction of war dissenters as disloyal and unamerican.
It was really the last straw in a series of events that drove a wedge between us and the land of our birth, the first being a daily pledge that proclaimed that Americans believe in "one nation, under God," as well as currency that announced that Americans trust in God. That pretty much excluded me even as a boy. My wife felt the same way. That's not us.
If you'd like any pointers on a possible life in Mexico, please feel free to PM me. I'd be glad to help. Presently, we are a few weeks away from an answer from the Mexican government on our citizenship applications.
Our cost of living is approximately $25,000 USD a year without skimping, and we get about 8% on government insured bonds. Mortgages are rare here, so we own our home free and clear, and have no car or credit card payments, nor other debt. Furthermore, we are 100% solar now, and thus pay no power bill.
I had a low back surgery last month, and paid for it 100% cash out of pocket, a total of about $8000 USD for all expenses including pre-op evaluation, hospital fees, and the costs of all diagnostics, medical supplies, and physicians fees (surgeon, assistant, anesthesiologist, pathologist). A cataract surgery in 2015 was $2000 total without help from any insurance.
Although there are clusters of expats here in subdivisions here that are mostly American or Canadian, we live in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood (I'm hearing roosters crowing as I type, and horses are often heard clip-clopping by our home). The Mexicans have welcomed us. Yesterday, an elderly Mexican neighbor brought us a few avocados from her tree. My wife likes to make them banana bread made from yard bananas, and we buy gifts for the local children at Christmas. We all watch out for one another.
In any event, we prefer this culture to the one we left, which seems so divided and angry.
