I don't understand why that is a problem. I used to post on forums giving my real name, address and telephone number. What are you afraid of? Some people on the forum didn't believe me, so one of them sent a post card and I had to describe it to prove I had received it. Some other people called me and we had some nice discussions on the phone. What harm do you expect?
Not to put too fine a point on it but people have been killed by police who have been fooled into believing a kidnapping or bomb situation is going on in a home because a deranged internet troll phoned it in.

It's called swatting.

One person that happened to had done nothing but beat someone else in a video game.

Fun fact, the reason we probably won't be seeing that ******** TJ Miller in any more Deadpool movies is because he falsely reported a bomb in the purse of a woman he fought with on an Amtrak train.

Granted, I definitely don't think this will happen to anyone who gives their private information out online. But I do think that is probably one of the worst things that could happen. Of course doxxing has led to all sorts of harassing behavior too.

People can get you fired from your job, swat you, steal all your money, steal your identity (in the legal sense) kidnap you or just simply harras you.
I recall in schools they started awareness campaigns warning kids of the dangers and that was barely after the Internet was invented.
I've done some borderline questionable stuff online in my teen years. Borne from naivety. But I'd never give out even remotely personal details.

If we are not counting AOL (3.5 is when I started) my first one was kyuuten(きゅうてん) which has several meanings in Japanese depending on how its written or the context it is being used. Mine alternated between sudden change (急転) and sky (九天).

Twice, I have joined atheist forums under the screen name Hevvin Machine.
I am just difficult that way.

Every other forum since 1999 I am Tom.
With the lame screen name of Columbus.

wizanda - As couldn't get Zanda @ yahoo so decided to make up www i Zanda; even tho it sounds like a wizard, thought it would be interesting to put the religious off, whilst still having a sacred name.

In my opinion. :innocent:

My first username was Christine, how adventurous (or devious) was that. It was way back when you could usually use your name without numbers or special characters.

Don't remember the forum name and long since been absorbed by artstation or devientart or similar.

I use my real name on some forums.
But on forums like this one, where many people
are abusive, I prefer that things be less personal.
And here I'm Groundskeeper Willie.

RF abusive? Wow, such a sheltered life you lead.

There are a few posters on here that migrated from the virtual food fight that was _________

It's true.
Revoltistan is much like Hobbiton in The Shire...but with taller hobbits.

The occasional haggis has flown here too.

Not that this has anything to do with TJ Miller, but have you ever seen the movie We're the Millers..? I watched that the other night and died laughing.:)

I doubt anyone would ever do anything like that to me though. ;)

But no, seriously, I've had people stalk me, and like report like every move I make to mod staff on other forums because they hated me so much. :D

The first I remember was at Runnersworld. It was my legal first name (which is not Jainarayan) and first initial of my last name. Not very creative, I know. :p

What was your first ever internet forum username*?

Mine was FireWillow. I know, go figure, huh?

*Doesn't necessarily have to be RF unless RF was the first internet forum you joined.
I joined the interwebs in 1993 or so, on the original Diablo's Battle.net as YmirGF. Who knew I'd still be using it 26 years later and have never used any other moniker. Two part moniker, first part was the user name, Ymir, (pronounced WHY-MER) or alternately (Ya-mere) and the 2nd part was the Guild one was associated with and mine was "Golden Falcon", hence GF.

Ymir, (pronounced WHY-MER) or alternately (Ya-mere)

Ymir was the name given to the creature from Venus in the movie '20 Million Miles to Earth'. In Norse mythology Ymir is the primordial and ancestral jötun.
