I think if a country is rich enough to afford universal health care, it should implement universal health care. What's the purpose of even having a country if the country doesn't take care of its own? Sheesh! Might as well invite invasion by someone who will.
I agree, not only is it the moral thing to do, it is also the fiscally conservative thing to do. Right now there are redundant layers of bureaucracy due to our crazy system. We have both governmental bureaucracy and private health insurance bureaucracy. To make it worse many people have more than one source of insurance. Plus the private companies need to make a profit to boot. This cannot be effective. I am pretty sure that Bernie is right when he says that we pay more for health care and get less than those in Europe.

As a fiscal conservative single payer is the clear way to go.

What doesn't make sense to me is how many prolifers also oppose social assistance programs for struggling mothers. "You better bring that fetus into the world dispite your situation, but once you do **** you both, you're on your own."

I don't oppose social programs. I think assistance should be available to those that need it, and I support access to birth control.

Yes, I think the government has the duty to provide such an essential service to its citizens instead of letting it be solely for-profit.

Unfortunately, Senator John McCain, who wanted to be spiteful to Trump rather than repeal and replace Obamacare, betrayed the GOP effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.

If you believe this, if this is the foundation of your nation, then you must believe that the proper role of government is to do what it can to protect the lives of their citizens. This should include healthcare.

The cost to taxpayers for paying every dollar of everybody's health care is prohibitively expensive at currently reasonable levels of taxation.

People already pay out that money out of their own pocket? Why couldn't a tax increase take care of the additional costs? Single payer is less expensive where it has been tried. It gets rid of a layer of bureaucracy.

Where is there a single payer system where taxpayers pay all the medical bills of everybody? Insured cost sharing of medical bills keeps the health care system supply and demand in order. If taxpayers were to fund every dollar of everyone's medical bills, then there'd be a shortage of providers, unreasonable wait times for getting basic services, and health care rationing. Is this what you'd like? I think not.

The American fixation on "rights" can get a little tiresome. Does something need to be a "right" before we can acknowledge it is something any civilised society should provide?

Dental and vision care aren't covered by tax payer funded health insurance in most developed nations, and there are usually co-pays and deductibles for medical services covered by any single payer system.

That doesn't refute my point. Fine. Don't cover dental and optical if you don't want. Covering straight nedical services isn't prohibitively expensive. Australia does cover dental, by the way, and there are no copays and deductibles in the public system. We do have private health cover, but that covers a minority of people. The majority rely on the public system, and there is none of the rationing the doomsayers claim.

I suggest you look up your nation's military expenditure, then the estimated cost for providing national health care, and then get back to us about "prohibitive tax payer expense"

It's not even that. Improving the lot of new parents and their children is a great way to encourage pregnant people to continue the pregnancy. Making life as awful as possible for new parents pushes people toward abortion.

Because the so-called "pro-life" movement isn't about life. It isn't even about preventing abortion.

If a tame stray dog were wandering around on my property, I'd be wrong for me to torture and kill this life; likewise, it's wrong for somebody to torture and kill a living human fetus. Right?
