One of about 20 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo's I saw this morning, this one is feeding on a Banksia cone. During the early settlement they were known as funeral birds and considered a bad omen, many were shot because of superstition. Land clearing remains the major danger to them as they need old growth forests for breeding hollows. Fortunately they are making a bit of a come back in my area and the flock had a few young with them. Unfortunately their close relative the Glossy Black Cockatoo is not fairing so well and remains endangered.
