Black Cockatoo

One of about 20 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo's I saw this morning, this one is feeding on a Banksia cone. During the early settlement they were known as funeral birds and considered a bad omen, many were shot because of superstition. Land clearing remains the major danger to them as they need old growth forests for breeding hollows. Fortunately they are making a bit of a come back in my area and the flock had a few young with them. Unfortunately their close relative the Glossy Black Cockatoo is not fairing so well and remains endangered.

I am super lucky and get all sorts of amazing bird landing in my front trees, right by our decking.
However, of all the super cool birds we have seen, we've never had a black cockatoo on our property.

They are pretty amazing.
