Is healthcare a right? Anyone is welcome here.

You will probably start an argument about what the word "right" means in this context.

But I agree with you. Here in first world countries there is no moral excuse for people to do without basic healthcare. Tom
Thank you, I agree. I wonder why more prolifers don't agree.

I think if a country is rich enough to afford universal health care, it should implement universal health care. What's the purpose of even having a country if the country doesn't take care of its own? Sheesh! Might as well invite invasion by someone who will.

To me a mark of civilization is the ability to get a reasonable level of health care. Like all other rights, there are limitations - no right is absolute. So I think the USA should catch up with all the other developed nations in offering health care to all.

Further the US system distorts the marketplace because companies in the US are typically responsible for supplying health care to employees whereas in the rest of the developed world it's a government function. So this puts us in a competitive disadvantage.

So to me the answer is yes we should and the question becomes how should we do this. My general answer is to offer Medicare to all who want it with premiums based on ability to pay. Those who want private insurance should be allowed to buy it.

This also expands competition for health care providers.

I say yes. People need healthcare to live, and as a prolifer, I believe people have the right to live. Some background: I am a moderate, not a liberal. I just happen to believe healthcare is a right.

Not a right as healthcare is a commodity and linked with other commodity markets. This does not mean a government can not take upon itself the responsibility for providing it as a duty of government.

That's one reason why I don't agree with the very phrase "pro life" because, unlike the Catholic Church, most drop the issue once a child is born. It is to me a fundamental inconsistency in the position.

Good point. It is true of a lot of far right people.

To me it's not a commodity like others for one very simple reason. If I'm injured and unconscious I'll be taken to a hospital and treated no matter what. I can choose to buy a refrigerator or car, I have no choice if I'm unconscious. I have no ability at that time to shop for the best service at the best price especially since what treatment I might need might be better at one hospital than another.

But I do agree there should be competition to provide the best service at the lowest price.

Why divide the Human Family up by national borders?

Does being born the USA make one more entitled to basic healthcare than being born in Thailand or Haiti?

I am really kinda difficult on ProLife issues. I see this as a huge one, second only to environmental degradation.

A right? No. However it is in the best interests of a nation to support the health of its population.
What I'd like to see is a government controlled health system staff by government educated Doctors and Nurses as an option. You could choose to pay into this system if you were so inclined or opt out for private insurance.

Not everyone wants democracy or accept the laws of one specific nation and there is no world government as of yet. There has to be enforcement of standards and resource distribution.

Actually you do have a choice and its codified by law under power of attorney and healthcare proxies.

I agree. It's a huge logistical problem. One totally beyond the primitive ethics of most religions.

But suppose well equipped and staffed health clinics were as pervasive as McDonald's restaurants?
C'mon, we put a man on the moon and created internet.
We can do This!

Sorry I am being silly, any health system that is in place for any country then the citizens have to pay, because one day an individual can cost a large sum of money to have their life saved. That individual will always be grateful for it. One day it could be you.

If the World got behind this fine. You just can't expect one nation to care for the rest of the world.
