Why Should It Matter?

If you identify with a particular religion or philosophy and label yourself as such, and another comes along with different ideas on what that religion or philosophy is and labels themselves the same as you, does it matter to you? If so, why? If not, why not?

Would you go as far as to tell them that they are a false (insert aforementioned label here)? What can be accomplished by doing so?

Me personally? I wouldn't care. Diversity, in my opinion, should be approached peacefully and with respect. Typically, the idea of ousting a fellow church member means you have a power issue. That is a vice.

It's best to allow others to carry out their spiritual journey with a positive attitude, and you do the same.

Do you think I could make a good Nondualist? :)

Well it matters to me in that I would feel the other person is causing confusion if the person espouses beliefs that do not fit the label of their beliefs. Others will be needlessly misled by the false so-and-so and think 'x' beliefs are compatible with religion 'z' when they are not!

Well, that's a good point. I never would have researched Advaita, had you not said something like you did. So the very concept of knowing and learning beliefs does have some value.

...It is interesting BTW.

It matters to me because words have meaning. If someone believing in the divinity of Mickey Mouse calls themselves an atheist, they either don't understand the term or they're intentionally muddying the waters. Wouldn't it be irritating if a grocery store called apples a "grain" and sold them in the flour aisle? Ignoring the meaning words have will always **** off a significant number of people.

Personally If I disagree with another world view, ie atheist, I would not label them absolutely 'false.' From te fallible human perspective I could be wrong myself regardless of what I believe, As far as 'labels' go, prefer a uniform definitions and concept understanding without preference for one over another.

Actually I consider the atheist world view more rational and logical than the ancient wolrd views like Judaism and Christianity.

It matters because they will then be representing said religion to the rest of the world. Perhaps by their actions giving your religion a bad name. There is nothing much you can really do about it; but it does matter.

Hinduism has a lot of diversity. That said, if somebody says that he believes that human sacrifice is an integral part of Hinduism, I would have a duty to object.

Knowing truth and the real nature of reality matters to me.

However, if someone believes something that contradicts reality, does it ultimately matter? No, because reality will remain reality "no matter" what we believe.

I think everyone is be free to hold whatever beliefs, ideas, and opinions they may have (of course we should still implore others to think critically). Where it becomes a concern is when people act upon them in a way that victimizes, violates rights, and impedes upon liberty.

Why do you think some people do that?

It will not matter to me unless the person tells me that my belief is wrong. In that case, I will return the compliment. Every action has a reaction, Newton's law.

I think so. My forum has people like you. I am a bit more touchy. :D

Religions are beliefs, 'dharma' (one's duty and ethical action) is a necessity.
(Kindly excuse me for rearranging your post, I have a fetish for conserving internet space. :D)

It would spark my curiousity and if appropriate challenge to question what doesnt make sense to me. I did this on the RF boards, actually. Someone specifically labeled themselves the same belief as I practice yet hold totally contradicting views and foundations of my (the) belief/Dharma itself....both "scripturally" and conbobulated one sided conclusions.

It does bother me; but, I dont address it unless its appropriate. I dont evangalize nor proselytize. I dont feel the need to share my faith without anothers permission, nor do I to convert to my understanding of it.
No. But Id be curious and if appropriate ask questions about how he or she associates "my" religious label with beliefs I am not personally familar with being part of my faith.

If he said The Buddha believed in god and I know The Buddha only believed that gods exist but have no specific importance in The Dharma, Id want to know more about why he feels that way and after sharing my understanding of the Dharma, if appropriate tell him my disagrements to understand his as well.

In other words, I wouldnt say they are false; to each his own. I may say they are incorrect about something direct (The Buddha taught rebirth not reincarnation) but other than that, unless both parties want to learn to understand their own views, nothing gets accomplished.

Edited.

Whats a example of someone acting on a religious belief that would impede someone elses liberty? Just curious.
