I love Jesus but I can be mean when I struggle with mental health issues. I want to be like Jesus except without the suffering.

Matthew 8:20 "And Jesus saith unto him, 'The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay [his] head.'"
Matthew 5:23 "Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift."

Hate is not the opposite of love; selfishness is. I would imagine that you find it hard to be loving during episodes of mental illness because it can be hard to focus on anyone other than yourself during those times.
