Are there any Flat Earth believers here?

A belief in a Flat Earth is not that different from believing in creationism or the flood myth. All beliefs are based upon a literal reading of the Bible. I ask because the Flat Earth movement is now making even national news:

Warning, it may be a very good idea to put on oven mitts before watching the video.

Wouldn't it be easier to just go to the edge?

Sheesh!

It's all about the money. They sell books etc. to those masses. I tried to believe in flat earth since i don't want to believe blindly in something. But my head started spinning so hard after a few days that i started seeing how the flat earth is just a troll movement who is selling their doctrines to their people.

Fake news, fake stories etc. make money these days.

I don't know if the Bible is supporting a flat earth.. Do you mean the real Bible in Hebrew and Greek? Or these flat earther translations?

Maybe in this age of overwhelming access to information, some people need blinders to justify their sense of failure to keep up with it all (a very valid feeling actually).

Maybe some people know (like our president) that the more outrageous the false belief, the more attention you can get for repeating it.

I tend to think many Flat-earthers are simply trolling folks. They try to come up with anyway of convincing folks that the earth is flat. It's like the "unlimited energy" videos on youtube.

You think, how could I go about convincing folks the earth is actually flat and get a kick out of folks trying to prove you are wrong.

Are you trawling for extreme Jehovah's Witnesses or something?

And yet one can find "scientists " that support the Floor myth. I would not underestimate the ability of some people to delude themselves.

Oh but some of these free energy people actually believe it. I've come across quite a few on science forums. Especially if it involves magnets. For some reason they love magnets. (This allows Tesla to put in a cameo appearance, too. They love Tesla.)

But Flat Earth is different. I think you must be right that most are troll personalities, enjoying a wind-up of everybody else.

Yes, I believe a few might be deluding themselves as well. But, I've considered joining the Flat Earth Society just to screw with people. See how well they can actually argue for a "round" earth.

Some of the arguments are fairly sophisticated to the point it's not always easy to find the faults. Like one guy claimed he setup a laser beam at about sea level and was able detect the laser 20 miles away at the same elevation. If the earth is curved, shouldn't the curvature of the earth interfere with line of sight? Seemed like more of a hobby trying to prove the earth is flat.

I've heard the claim that you can't see a ship below the horizon not because of the curvature of the Earth, but because the ship is too far away to see. But how do they explain the ship's apparent rise above the horizon? That indicates some sort of curvature or elevation. What gives? o_O

I've done a simple experiment proving the Earth's nearly spherical shape and size.

I've calculated the Earth's circumference by observing and measuring the North Star's angle of view from my horizon with a clinometer at 46 degrees latitude and then comparing Polaris' angle of view from my horizon at 43 degrees latitude. Using an odometer, I measured the 200 miles of distance I traveled north to south on I-29 between 46 and 43 degrees latitude.
I then took the 200 miles distance difference and divided it by the 3 degrees latitude difference and calculated 66.666 miles per 1 degree of distance. Then I multiplied 66.666 miles * 360 to calculate the Earth's circumference at 24,000 miles.

Maybe if educators and their students would do fun and interesting scientific projects similar to what I've described above, then they could measure and see for themselves that the Earth is nearly a perfect sphere with a circumference of around 24,000 miles instead of flat.

Has any other RF members here other than me actually measured and calculated the Earth's circumference. If so, what were the results of your observation, measurement, and calculation for the Earth's circumference size?

When people reject reality to that extent one will find no rational reason. There will be excuses. They do not tend to understand perspective and that is one of their favorite claims.

Over that distance on the right day there can be refractive bending of light. If you ever saw a heat mirage, those were common on highways where I grew up, one could see an example of that. The often misapply the curvature of the Earth when they do work as well. Using an equation that would only apply to a light that was at ground level being shot tangentially to the Earth and not taking into account the elevation of both the observer and the source. Where I live now I can easily see about 80 miles to the north and 80 miles to the south with no problem. And that is at sea level. Though I am looking at a couple of mountains over 12,000 feet tall when I do so.

We do/did have a long time member who came out as a flat-earther not too long ago. He comes and goes so I don't know if he's still around.

The Lost One
The Bible not only indicate a “flat earth”, but also geocentric model of planetary motion, meaning the Earth is fixed, and Sun, Moon and stars moved across the sky.

The very notion of Earth being the centre of the world or universe, implied “flat earth” belief.

The Bible also tell us that the sky is a dome or vault.

The Qur’an is no better with astronomy and earth science.

Both scriptures are full of false knowledge about the Earth and Sun and stars.

In fact, neither scriptures understand the Sun is a star.
