Muslims cut and whip themselves for Ashura

I'm not saying the average Muslim does this. It's interesting watching their celebrations and traditions though.
Kinda bloody:

I admire their dedication though!

Do you think that is healthy Behavior? What does it accomplish? I don't think Allah is impressed or pleased by it.

I'm well aware that some Catholics used to do that. I find it unhealthy and I'm glad the church does not keep that tradition.

I'm sure there's still a tiny percentage left that does that.

Bloody photos of the event. Children are also mutilated:

Catholics still whip and crucify themselves during Good Friday processions in Catholic countries like the Phillipines.

Pain can produce an altered state of consciousness so that's one underlying reason why people might do that sort of stuff. I personally don't care. If they want to do it, who cares. Doing it to children is disgusting and abhorrent, though.

That would be culturally enriching if they started doing that in my city. :D

Who are we to criticize other cultures right?

Yes I saw some of that via video in the Philippines. I think what they're doing is terrible. My understanding is the pope has openly discouraged it.

I criticize other cultures a lot. Some are awful. I just don't think this practice is that big of a deal. The children thing is messed up, though.

"These customs are strongly discouraged by the Catholic Church in the Philippines, which considers them to be fanatical, superstitious expressions of Folk Catholicism and self-harmcontrary to its teachings on the body. "

Don't you think the average psychiatrist would see something wrong with self-mutilation?
It depends on the context. You're supposed to factor in cultural and religious practices. Whipping or cutting yourself as part of a cultural festival is not the same thing as cutting yourself as an attempt at emotional regulation.

I notice they're mainly cutting the scalp. The scalp is rich in blood vessels and bleeds a lot when cut. I know this because I cut myself at times when shaving my head. So it makes it look more "hardcore" then it actually is.

Ok...as long as they aren't giving themselves big scars, I respect their tradition.

To be clear, it's only some Shia Muslims who practice the whipping and cutting. It is not supported or viewed as permissible among all Shia. Personally, I don't see how it would be permissible in Islam so I would agree with those who view it as haram.

Yes, i figured it was a small percentage that does it.

I object to Catholic practices of self-flaggelation as well.

I think that the Catholic and Abrahamic view that inflicting suffering upon ourselves can atone for sin, is very dangerous.

People start thinking that suffering is saving souls, and they start doing unhealthy penances.

I think we should all find meaning in suffering and see it as a way to grow closer to God, but we should never inflict such things on ourselves.

My original conversion to Catholicism was very unhealthy because of the writings of some Saints. I thought all the problems in the world were caused because God is offended with our sins, so I was inflicting punishment on myself to atone for sin and bring God's grace to Earth.

It was a very unhappy, scary, miserable place to be.

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...

There are people who LITERALLY have themselves crucified at Easter, and many other forms of self flagellation. Hindus have similar practices, too, as well as shamans.

So once again, your "ZOMG! LOOK AT THE CRAZY MUSLIMS!" OP seems, at best, somewhat ignorant about wider cultural practices.

Apparently you didn't read my Op. I said that behavior is in Catholicism as well.

I object to any dark-aged Theocracy, Muslim or Catholic or whatever. I just mention Islam more because I see it more in Islam.

I criticize the Bible here all the time. I started more threads criticizing the Bible and Christians than I have towards Muslims.

I think much of the Bible is a thoroughly disgusting, Bizzare, bigoted, savage book. However, I see those type of barbaric policies enforced more with Muslims.

I also started a thread about the Hindus who hang themselves from Hooks and mutilate themselves as well.

Well @Kangaroo Feathers..? Now that flipping it won't work (since the OP doesn't care or at least already acknowledges that) what will you do next?

...Do you have any alternative methods for sheilding Islam from criticism?

My problem with Islam has little to do with a small percentage of people that cut themselves or the tiny percent that are terrorists.

My problem is with Islamic governments that are robbing hundreds of millions of people of freedom, and imprisoning and killing people for simply speaking the truth about Muhammad.

Do away with Sharia , theocracy, violence, hate, blasphemy laws , and the rape policies, and I won't complain about Islam.

I will never forget the gruesome graphic tortures and calls to violence and bigotry in the Quran though.

And I will never approve of the Bible either for some of the same reasons.
