Banned Mormon Cartoon

I know some of what is said here is true of the faith, but is all of it pretty much on point?

If not, what has it got wrong?

Spiffy animation. I am curious what the Mormon posters here on RF think of this cartoon?

By the way, banned by whom?

You are no longer allowed to call them Mormons.
Latter Day Saints no longer want to be called Mormons
It's only a request by the Mormon church that non-Mormons not call Mormons, "Mormons," or the Mormon Church the "Mormon Church." Mormon Church leader Russell Nelson has no power to disallow anyone outside its membership from calling Mormons, "Mormons," or the Mormon Church the "Mormon Church."

90%-95% of it is either flat out wrong or is kind of a caricature. Very little of it is accurate. But as far as it being "banned," that's nonsense. The Church never "bans" books or articles or plays or movies or TV shows or stupid cartoons. (I realize that right there on the video, it says, "banned Mormon cartoon." And of course, if that's what it says, it must be right.)

After declaring that "the basic tenets of Mormonism are in direct conflict with biblical Christianity" (which is a false premise to begin with), it states that the video is "based directly on Mormon publications." It then proceeds to give a point by point analysis of the religion using statements that aren't found in any Mormon publication. The video is really old (I'd say probably about 20 years old). It's clearly the work of someone who has a lot of time on his hands, a very, very poor understanding of Mormonism and a lot of hatred for the faith.

You're "allowed" to call us whatever you want. The Church's leadership has simply asked that people use the correct name of the Church in its first mention (for instance in this thread), and then from there on to use the words, "the Church." For anyone who actually wants to be informed on the subject, the name of the Church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." I realize that, for some people, that's a lot to ask.

You're such a killjoy.
This thread would be much more fun if you said
it was banned for revealing deep dark secrets.

We know so little about other people's religions
that you could tell us anything, & we'd believe it.
We're putty in your hands.

Yeah, I know. But I do have that "Mormon glow" which can be a great source of wonderment.

Yeah, right. A few people might believe anything I said, but the vast majority would insist that most of what I said was lies. ;)

Does the vast majority know that much?
I'd say that the average adult in the United States, if actually given a test on LDS beliefs, would fail miserably. Most of what people "know" about Mormonism comes from websites and various publications that are completely lacking in credibility. The video in the OP is a perfect example of the kinds of things most people actually think we believe. Let me give you an analogy. Roman Catholics believe in the doctrine of transubstantiation, which teaches that the Eucharistic elements (i.e. the bread and wine) are actually transformed into the body and blood of Christ at their consecration, leaving only the appearance of bread and wine. Now if the producer of the video in the OP were to make a cartoon showing Catholic doctrines, the narrative would probably say, "Catholics are cannibals. Every time they go to mass, they sit down to a dinner of roasted Jesus and booze." He'd have a delightful little cartoon illustrating such a "meal." Oh, and he'd say, "This is straight out of Catholic writings."

Hmmmm.....I suspect that there might be some misinformation about more than one religion.

I just watched the cartoon again, since I hadn't seen it for years. I thought I might at least attempt to state what the video got right (since that would be much less time-consuming than to state what it got wrong). But I noticed almost immediately that even when there were a few words in a sentence that were roughly accurate, they were embedded within a sentence which, as a whole, was false. And some of the stuff! Oh my gosh! How anybody could have come up with such nonsense is beyond me.

Which parts of it are accurate then? I certainly have heard other Mormons claim to believe some of these things that were in that video. I'd like to see if what I've been told by them matches with what you say is accurate, just for comparison's sake.

This is a propaganda film. Very weird and creepily made.

Note how the way it's made, is subjectively set up to go in a certain direction, this isnt a normal explanation , the way you would do it honestly.

Like I said, so much of it was truth mixed with error that almost no complete sentence in the video was accurate. If there is a specific sentence in the video that you can quote verbatim, I'll do my best to explain what part of it is accurate and what part of it is intended to be misleading. Or if it would be easier for you, take a segment that is no longer than 30 seconds, give me the starting and ending times of that segment on the video and I'll just state how our actual belief differs from the way it was stated in the video.
