So I Was Spat On Today...

Just when I thought I'd seen everything associated with my job...I was spat upon today. I'm a germophobe, so it was a struggle to get through the police report and internal reports. No surprise that as soon as humanly possible, I left work to shower and change.

What would you have done in a similar situation?

What's the worst thing you've dealt with on the job?

I was slapped by a toddler while mom and grandma maybe laughed it up as "cute" bull**** and "oh, you can't do that, ha ha."
I went immediately outside, smoked two cigarettes at the same time, and waited until they left because there was no defusing my anger until it passed on its own and it's likely one word from either would have caused me to blow up.
I've also had food thrown at me. That was a "catch and release" moment as I caught the bag (this was drive through when I worked at Arbys), and before any though occurred I launched it back through the window. The guy sped off so nothing happened other than the bag hitting nothing but the pavement. I rarely worked drive through after that.

Reporting the details to police somehow made me feel sillier. The officer asked whether I’d done anything to provoke my assailant. Not that I know of. Did he seem to have a mental illness? How could I possibly tell? Why didn’t you snap a photo with your cellphone? Dammit, that didn’t cross my mind.

The officer told me to go home, put on a chick flick and try to forget about it.

“And don’t go out and get drunk,” the kind officer advised. “That never helps.”...

“In a lot of the occurrences, a lot of the victims didn’t really want to call police,” Det.-Const. Shafiq said. “[They think] it’s not a huge occurrence; somebody spat at them and ran off. But we told them, ‘You should call for something like this. You’re not the only victim. Obviously, he’s doing this to other people.’”

By reporting these incidents, we don’t just shrug off such behaviour as a harsh reality of city life — we try to ensure it doesn’t hit other people in the same way or worse. No reason to feel silly or shameful about that.
Urban Scrawl: What to do when you get spit on

Never had anything like that happen to me at work. Haven't been spat on since I was 17.

Bummer. I'd be furious.
Filing a police report....I'd do that too....after changing clothing & showering.
Edit....
Gotta preserve the spit for DNA if it ever comes to that.

I was once assaulted by a commercial tenant.
Cops came.
They informed the guy how lucky he was that I didn't shoot him,
because it would've been legal. (The perp didn't know I was armed.)
I just physically restrained him because I didn't see much danger.

One poster here has told me that we carry guns because we want to
shoot someone. People can be so utterly stupid, eh.

When I was in juvenile detention I urinated into some milk cartons and threw it on officers.

I think spitting on someone is a much lesser crime.

I haven't done anything like that as an adult.

The worst I screwed up at a job was as a car detailer. We spent all day detailing a car for someone to purchase, and then I ruined the mirror and headlights backing out of the garage not seeing a pole.

The boss told me I was f****** psychotic! and that it was the stupidest thing he's ever seen.

I've never had anyone spit on me though.... At least not on the job.

I hope it was a learning experience.

I am sorry that happened to you.

I was also spat on and called a Baby Killer in 1969 when I returned home after Military Service.

Working for a travelling carnival I'd been spit at, punched, been in the line of fire for a couple of shoot outs, and had a drink thrown in my face.

My second day was even worse.

I'm still working toward my degree. My only "job" so far has been administrating on RF.

The worst part is... dealing with Site Feedback and angry PMs. Always. :p

I was tempted to check the code and see if it was intended to be cyber poop instead.

Lot of that too.

Ya know DS, reading your post made me realize something: even with all of the right-in-your-face rl crap that came with working for a carnival and a few other jobs I've had, I can honestly say that never in my life have I ever gotten as PO-ed over work related anything as I have in here, especially in Site Feedback. :p

Old saying from academia which applies well to RF.....

Part of the Boardwalk in Heaven is lined with booths full of hippies sitting over dunk tanks full of their own spit.

My condolences. At least the spit is not poisonous, :D

Never had a job myself where something like this can happen.
