For Our Children’s Children

I was recently walking through a wildlife sanctuary and stopped to watch some birds when I was surprised by a squirrel who came right up to me and starred at me for a short while before moving to a safer distance. I had a sudden sad thought – what if my children or theirs would no longer be able to enjoy such a simple pleasure as seeing wildlife in their home? Could a single species ever be so selfish and so arrogant to not leave room for others? Could a few generations of that species be so self-seeking or so short sided as they are consuming and destroying the world they live in that the leave little to nothing for their own children and for their children’s children.

What we humans are doing to the Earth is the most important moral issue of our age. Are we so short sighted in attending to our own needs that we cannot see the world we will leave to those that follow? Are we so foolish to think that the other life we share on this planet are not important enough to protect? We admire our own technology and our intelligence, but are we smart enough to see what we are doing for the future of our children and to the life around us?

I don't want/can't have my own kids, but I couldn't agree more. For all the amazing things we've done as a species, we are absolutely imbecilic and lack anything that resembles foresight when it comes to how we take care of our Home.

I won't say its the most important, but I will admit it is important. There are more urgent and more important needs possibly.

Each person has different needs, but this is not saying that other life is unimportant. It can be short sighted to allow species to go extinct.

We admire our own technology and our intelligence, but are we smart enough to see what we are doing for the future of our children and to the life around us?
Yes we are.

Just about every species is exactly that and is only kept in check by natural bounds.

What are the more urgent needs than to have a world fit to live in?

Each person needs food, water and air as well a temperature compatible with life. What is more basic than that? We are degrading the very things we need to survive and increasing multiple risks to our health and well being. Basic needs are important to everyone.

Are we smart enough to save the world we call home? And what home will it be like to live in? We were warned of this problem two centuries ago and again in the last century and we have not yet been smart enough to stop what is happening.

I stand corrected on your last statement but we have eliminated most of the natural checks except for the physical ones and diseases.

They will have to fit in the world that they get. We did that when the dinosaurs disappeared. They won't see the himalayas as I saw them. I did not see the himalayas as my grannies saw them. Unfortunate, but that is what it is. In Delhi, we don't even see or hear sparrows chirp.

Nuclear war isn't the only threat to the planet. As the Fox pointed out, the 'food, water and air' we depend on are products of a complex, interconnected web of life, maintaining the ecosystem; a web we're rapidly degrading with our infectious increase and industry. We're the only species whose waste isn't food for other organisms.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in the God-will-fix-it basket, if I were you. The sky is falling and God has yet to make an appearance.
I won't say its the most important, but I will admit it is important. There are more urgent and more important needs possibly.
And what would these more urgent needs be? All life on Earth larger than a cockroach may be gone in a hundred years. Sorry to be a Cassandra, but we might want to stop worrying about our own, mundane interests and look at the big picture.
Each person has different needs, but this is not saying that other life is unimportant. It can be short sighted to allow species to go extinct.
True, but you understate. We depend on other life. The ecosystem we live in is created by and depends on biodiversity. You can't start removing screws and gears from a watch and expect it to go on ticking.
Just about every species is exactly that and is only kept in check by natural bounds.
Every species but one, which has removed itself from the natural, interdependent web of life and is now functioning like an infectious organism, set to destroy its host.

What if they don't, and people keep just dumping their waste and overusing the environment so it will be ruined for your grandkids.

God will make new animals soon.
Even if you believe so beyond any doubt, do you think we should just let it all be ruined?

Yes.

Are we so foolish to think that the other life we share on this planet are not important enough to protect?
Yes.

We admire our own technology and our intelligence, but are we smart enough to see what we are doing for the future of our children and to the life around us?
No.

Do you know why?
He disrespects Jehovah. In his haughtiness, the wicked man makes no investigation; All his thoughts are: “There is no God.”

Although claiming they were wise, they became foolish and turned the glory of the incorruptible God into something like the image of corruptible man and birds and four-footed creatures and reptiles.

How they twist things! Should the potter be regarded the same as the clay? Should what is made say about its maker: “He did not make me”? And does what is formed say about its former: “He shows no understanding”?

it is written:
“I will make the wisdom of the wise men perish, and the intelligence of the intellectuals I will reject.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this system of things? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not get to know God through its wisdom, God was pleased through the foolishness of what is preached to save those believing.
God chose the foolish things of the world to put the wise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of the world to put the strong things to shame; and God chose the insignificant things of the world and the things looked down on, the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, so that no one might boast in the sight of God.
Now we speak wisdom among those who are mature, but not the wisdom of this system of things nor that of the rulers of this system of things, who are to come to nothing. 7 But we speak God’s wisdom in a sacred secret, the hidden wisdom, which God foreordained before the systems of things for our glory. It is this wisdom that none of the rulers of this system of things came to know... just as it is written: “Eye has not seen and ear has not heard, nor have there been conceived in the heart of man the things that God has prepared for those who love him.”

Will man change, and make things better?
Individuals are turning to God, but man on a whole... it is written,
wicked men and impostors will advance from bad to worse, misleading and being misled.
In the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God,

Why?
The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one,
because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing that he has a short period of time.”

It is written.
Psalm 10:3, 4; Romans 1:22, 23; Isaiah 29:16; 1 Corinthians 1:19-2:13;
2 Timothy 3:13; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 12:12

I have no idea which ones. We have pushed. Now nature is pushing back. It will not be pretty, but we will address our mistakes. We know how to fix it, but at this moment we do not want to do the work. Its a lot of work, for example, to get the plastic out of the ocean. Its work, so people say its impossible. Its not. Its not impossible to take the lead out of the soil and water. Its not impossible to dig up the trash heaps and convert them to raw materials. Its not impossible to move contaminated rivers to new beds and then clean up the old beds. Where there are chemicals they can be filtered and collected. Its simply a lot of work, and people hate work. We aren't going to all die. Its not the same threat level as a meteor or a supervolcano.

Each person needs food, water and air as well a temperature compatible with life. What is more basic than that? We are degrading the very things we need to survive and increasing multiple risks to our health and well being. Basic needs are important to everyone.
That is true, however we are also working to cut down those problems and gathering ideas to repair damage. Many, many people are concerned and have been for centuries. We have something they did not. We have the technology to clean up the world. We also have examples of people who have been cleaning it up successfully, so we can reproduce the conditions for cleaning it up.

Are we smart enough to save the world we call home? And what home will it be like to live in? We were warned of this problem two centuries ago and again in the last century and we have not yet been smart enough to stop what is happening.
Lots of people are concerned, and much effort has gone into working to keep the world safe. Yes we are smart enough.

Humanity is quite fragile and is more interconnected than ever. In a single day over 50% of the population can be notified. Within 3 days just about everybody can be notified. Everybody, including climate change deniers, have begun to notice ocean rise.

You are right it is not impossible to reverse things but who is doing it on the scale needed. It is estimated that only 17% of the land remains untouched "wild" and most is inhospitable for humans. Areas untouched were humans could utilize is estimated at 2%. This seems a sad way to treat the world that gives us everything we need to live. What do we consider someone who only takes and never gives back?

We are smart enough to understand what we are doing to our world and there are people doing great things to educate, reverse and preserve what we have. But we have been aware of the consequences for over 2 centuries and yet we continue forward with our consumptive behavior despite these warnings.

Yes people are starting to notice what is happening yet there are leaders in nations who still deny, do not understand or do not care. The United States for instance. The problem is we do not know how fast things will change nor how far things will go. Yes it is possible some may live and also a possible that none will. No matter what, when the population of our world overtakes the carrying capacity of the earth the results will be devastating. Do we let it get to that point or do we take stronger measures to avoid the suffering that can occur and how do we do that? The consequences that can occur makes this such an important moral issue for all of us.

No we did not make the dinosaurs disappear but we starting to cause the next great episode of extinction. Yes everything changes but we have choices we can make to prevent unnecessary loss of habitat and coexist better with the those we share this planet with. It is a sad statement that they will have to fit into the world they get "that we create" when we should be more compassionate than that or we can just say that's the way it goes and not care at all. For all the world has given us we can give back.

I suppose He does, but not completely. Everything dies after all and suffers. God did put humans in charge of the earth and all the creatures. But, they're just animated dust like we are. No wonder they're often miserable. Poor things. Soon God will make immortal creatures to populate the new earth. More beautiful, intelligent etc. Just imagine any creature but even better than it is. Perfect in every way. Then there will be no suffering.

.. but we have choices ..
Do you think we have options? Will USA cut down on emissions? Will China, India stop their industrial progress or anyone would deny them that? Will the Chinese and Indian middle class stop to follow the American example?

What evidence do you have of this? Without evidence your creation story is no more valid than the Navajo or Maori creation stories.

Just imagine any creature but even better than it is. Perfect in every way. Then there will be no suffering.
Isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder, and intelligence, unless there's a abundant and reliable food source, is an extravagant waste of energy if it's not absolutely necessary.
Would these new, immortal beings be breeding? Would they be eating? I can see problems there.

"Perfect in every way" is problematic, as well. Most creatures, including us, are a collection of compromises and workarounds. They got that way because of how evolution works.

How is God going to completely overhaul all these Rube Goldberg creatures, magic poofing? Does that really sound reasonable to you?

Whatever we do, we might already have reached the tipping point, the point where the warming becomes self sustaining whether we take action or not.
There are a number of natural mechanisms, now independent of human activity, contributing to the warming -- and accelerating.

We can only hope so but unfortunately to many will have to suffer first before people start to accept. Already we are witnessing changes that are affecting people from flooding to fires/drought. Once food shortages start to occur people will start to listen. The only other option is for all of us to accept what is happening and convince others to become more active in positive ways to change our own behaviors and influence political attitudes.
Our first problem is we must accept that we as individuals have to accept sacrifices ourselves.
We must rethink our over consumptive behavior. We must rethink family size since population as well as emissions is also part of the Earths problem. We must view the nonhuman world with greater respect. If we cannot initiate these ourselves then how do we convince others.
None of this will be easy but the alternative leads to the demise of our planet and us.

I heard an illustration today, that I think if quite fitting.
If one needs root canal treatment, would it be wise to look in the mirror, and give oneself?
Would it be wise to call up a friend, and ask them to do it for oneself - that friend having no training at all in dentistry?
That the reality of the situation, is it?
If however, one looks to a qualified dentist, one can be confident that they can get proper root canal treatment.

I remember when I was growing up, I was taught cleanliness - 'don't litter', 'Cleanliness is next to godliness I was told. So we looked for a garbage bin, to dispose our waste-paper etc..
Today, what do we see? How many of us have seen people throw bags of garbage from moving vehicles?
Yeah. All the hand go up on this.

I would not encourage anyone to try this though.

Now ask yourself, why?
How many people are growing up, on godly principles?
When we honestly evaluate the situation, is that not the root cause of mankind's failures? A failure to respect and follow Bible principles - or live by God's laws.

How many people care? Even if there are those few that care, are they capable of giving themselves root canal treatment? Are those whom they look to - world leaders, capable of performing that treatment - solve mankind's problems?
Does it appear that the world leaders are concerned?

I think we need to look to the one who is qualified to treat this problem.
Far from looking toward him though, the world denies the creator. :(
Will the world ever take notice? Revelation 11:18
Yes. The will have no choice in the mater... apparently.
