Madalyn Murray O'Hair Atheism?

Riders

Well-Known Member
Sense I have been debating Christians so much thought I would bring up a debate for Atheists.

Madalyn Murray O'air. I watched her speak on the Phil Donahue Show a few times. She always said she would welcome death and not be afraid.

I watched the investigation show too. She was kidnapped a long with her son, and they had gold tons of money in the bank. The killers later reported what happened and also witnesses that spoke to her son at the bank or where ever they kept their money that she and her son were terrified.

He kept having to calm her down. He had to go get money out of the bank for the kidnappers, they threatened to kill her if they did not get the money and guess what they got killed anyways.

Considering the fact that she as old and claimed she was not scared to die on the Phil Donahue show whats with all the fear.

Yea I know some will say its natural to be afraid but I don't think so, if your an atheist who claims not to be afraid?

Besides I have heard stories of Buddhist's who went to their grave with a smile on their faces gladly when they were put to death for their religion.

But why were they so stupid anyways? I thought she was smarter then that. Any time you get kidnapped and the kidnappers threaten to kill you if they can not have the money that means once they have your money your dead, your the only living witness. Never give over your money because the next ting that comes is death.

so why????????

It's natural for us all to fear death.
But for atheists, it's not because a sky fairy would judge us harshly.

The fact that someone says, "I do not fear death" isn't the same as "I don't mind dying".
We all know that we have a finite time on this earth, we hope it will be long and happy but that death will come when our body is no longer able to sustain us. But we do not want to die in (say) a car crash or after being kidnapped.

How can you expect anyone to not be afraid if they are held hostage and their life is threatened? That borders on blatant mockery of atheists who say they aren't afraid of death and show the normal signs of fear in a fearful situation.

I remember during my heart attack I was cool, but still apprehensive. It wasn't over the fact that I could die, it was more to do with any suffering and the unknown where the mind thinks up all sorts of things.

I think you're confusing the fear of death with the fear of dying.

For an atheist, death is oblivion. So there would be nothing there to fear, and no one there to fear it. But getting TO THAT STATE requires our death, which can be very slow, and very painful, and thus, we may reasonably and intently fear having to experience it.

No I am not making apologies for this thread nor do i take it back. The reason is Madylin Murray O'hair opened her big fat mouth and fought with Christians and laughed in the face of death bragging that she would never be afraid of death and laughed it off while making fun of Christians for believing in hell and heaven all those years.

That's why this thread is up she opened her big fat mouth and bragged about never being afraid to face death. The way she talked about it laughing at death yea I think she deserves some criticism.

Man, that is low. There's no reason to take that position. At one time, as an atheist, I thought the same as her as far as Christians go, and frankly, that hasn't changed much. Christians and what they believe can be really stupid. But so can we all. I don't think what atheists think or believe is immune to that ether, but no one deserves to die a horrible death, especially, in her case, with members of her family.

I agree with some of the posters in this thread, that there is a difference between a fear of death, i.e. oblivion, and a fear of whatever uncertainty her physical well being was in at that time.

It seems like what you are saying is that she deserved what she got, and that's just wrong from my perspective. I don't wish harm on anyone unless they do harm to someone else. That certainly wouldn't include making fun of or challenging one's beliefs.

Christians are forgiving.

I never ever ever said she deserved what she got it was a terrible death. All I'm saying is at her death she was terrified and she said no matter how she died she would never be afraid. There are plenty of folks who are not afraid to die I would not be.

Considering the fact that all I'm doing is repeating what she said, so why was she so scared. I really think in the end she was afraid of God.

There is a saying that there is no such thing as a dying atheist and I am asking the question is this, true, why be afraid of dying if you do not believe. I think its
a good question.

I agree with of the things Madylin Ohair did, she did take prayer out of schools which is good.

But she herself said a million times she would not be afraid of death and I am asking a question if it so natural to e terrified of death then maybe there is something to the idea there is no such thing as a dying atheist.

Its not low, I agreed with some her stuff. Although she did open her mouth and laugh disrespectfully about death herself. But I'm just asking a question being afraid of death is this not proof that there is no such thing as an Athiest?

I do not get it why would you be afraid of death if you don't believe?

Still kicking obviously. Just passing the second year now since. But I am prepared for the reality that statistically I'm not going to grow as old as a normal healthy person that does not have coronary artery disease and diabetes would. So far , everything stable at the moment. But I would say I'm more prepared for that day since I've had " practice" now. Just a consultation with the Reaper.

What? Me worry?

Same here during my little "heart event" ( I don't call it a heart attack because I never passed out or had chest pain, never saw any light at the end of a tunnel, and didn't talk to any dead relatives; waste of a good heart attack if you ask me). I remember having a sense of 'finality' but not of fear.

Sounds like you just had a little gas.
But even that can be deadly.....@wirey.

Maybe. But that 'gas' left me with a very bumpy ambulance ride and stents in two different arteries. However, looking back (fourteen years ago) it was an interesting experience.

Reminds me of the apocryphal old Chinese curse....
May you live in interesting times.

Well, to be afraid of death is one thing, to be afraid of any of the possible modes of death is another. Death itself is one thing being burned or beaten or tortured to death, suffering or drowning is another. I can't say for sure but I doubt that she ever said she wasn't afraid of death no matter the manner in which she could possibly die. Additionally there are other things to fear in death besides God. The finality of life, the end of being, the missing of joyful events and things failed to accomplish.

I doubt it very much if God was on her mind during her last moments.

So criticize her.
What is has to do with me (a 'fellow' atheist) is completely beyond me. But if you feel the need to criticize her, go for it. She can't hear you, mind. She's dead.
