What Harm Befalls a Child Who Sees Pornography?

I first saw some pornography when I was five. I found my single dad's stash. All I can say is that I'm aware of the sexualized world we live in a lot sooner than normal people do.

Just wondering.

.

I think it depends on a lot of factors. How many they see, at what age, type of pornography, etc.

If children were to watch it daily, they might decide to give it a try. Or perhaps, if it's over the top disgusting, and they're 6 yrs. Old, they might reject sex forever.

I guess it all depends on factors we can't ever predict for each and every individual.

Well, I expect that psychologists could write you a long list of negative results, but my first thought is that children who would see pornography might try to copy the scenes that they had seen with other children.

It could become an imprinted normal for them, and they might think that it is perfectly ok to treat anybody else just like the scenes that they had seen.

The real mouth-smacker would be if a you, say, had a small child who came to tell you what what some older boys and girls had made them do.......? ......... and of course they had filmed it all, just like the films they'd seen, and stuck it on u-tube? Young kids are quite adept with media today.

Exactly. Kids learn to relate to each other as sex objects narrowing life down to the sexual level.

And it's not like there has been no research on the topic including looking for effects on the brain The Impact of Pornography on Children for example

Ugh. I don't have my pile of books to cite from, but I have at least a couple that refute most of what that article claims, such as:
  1. Male subjects demonstrated increased callousness toward women.
  2. Subjects considered the crime of rape less serious.
Subjects were more accepting of sexual infidelity in a relationship.

And then some of them it has to explain why they bad things:
Subjects were more accepting of non-marital sexual activity and non-coital sexual practices such as oral and anal sex.
  1. Subjects were more likely to say they were dissatisfied with their sexual partner.
    1. Subjects valued marriage less and were twice as likely to believe marriage may become obsolete.
    2. Men experienced a decreased desire for children, and women experienced a decreased desire to have a daughter.
    3. Subjects showed a greater acceptance of female promiscuity.

Overall, it's not good for their development. It's harder to understand sexuality and the type of unethical and demeaning fantasies of pornography than the violent themes present in movies. If you're interested I suggest taking a gander at the research on the topic.

It seems to me that the main danger is one of learning of objectification of the human body before the emotional framework to deal with that idea is in place.

There are also specific forms of pornography that may be even more of a challenge.

No doubt depends upon many factors - such as the age of the child, what they see, how much sexual knowledge they already have (or lack), etc. For younger children the main issue might be that they won't be able to contextualise what they see with the knowledge they have at the time - which might protect them, but might also create problems. It might also make them more vulnerable to sexual abuse in some ways - perhaps seeking out more knowledge when they aren't really prepared for this. I'm sure many of us have come across children behaving more sexually than they should be for their age - I saw quite a lot during my school days - and I doubt that came about naturally.

I think overall the problem might be, like many other things too, something out of step with their natural development and which then might just affect how they subsequently develop. So, much like being sexually abused as a child.

Edit: And we do know that those intent on grooming children for their own sexual purposes will use such things as exposing them to pornography, whether of the legal or illegal kind.
