Three Days and Three Nights

You do if you've already been beaten and scourged severely. The amount of blood loss and sheer exhaustion from just the scourging and walking to Golgotha would have been tremendous. He would have been far too tired to keep himself upright on the cross, leading to fluid buildup in the lungs and eventual death by pulmonary edema far quicker than normal.

It's a typological thing. Jonah in the belly of the whale and eventual re-emergence from there foreshadows Jesus in the tomb and eventual resurrection.

Physical evidence on a lot of stuff about most common people from 2000 years ago is hard to come by.

Then why believe in things for which one cannot provide evidence, please?

Friday was day 1, Saturday was day 2, Sunday morning counted as day 3.
It is wrong calculation as Jesus was a Jew and the Jews followed lunar calendar.
Jesus was put in the tomb after the sunset in the tomb, so the counting should be started from Saturday.
There are Christian people who believe that Jesus was put on the Cross not on Friday but sometime earlier, so there is no proof as on what day Jesus was put on the Cross.

But it seems like Jesus was not in the tomb during the three hours of light on Thursday. So the only periods of light when He was in the tomb would be Friday and Saturday. He said He would be "in the heart of the earth" for three days and three nights not just that He would be dead. I think this idea is worth investigating but a few details need to be cleared up.

Neither Jonah was dead in the belly of the fish, so if the sign is to be accomplished by Jesus then he should not be dead in the tomb.
There is no similarity between a "living" and "dead". Right, please?

I always thought "the heart of the earth" meant in the tomb. Iwould be interested in your ideas as to what else it could mean. And where were the three days and nights spent?

Much of what people believe about religion comes from "faith". There is usually not a lot of physical evidence.

And again an off topic post as are all of paarsurrey's.

Jesus pegged the sign, to be shown to the adulterous Jews, on the sign of Jonah.
The essence of the sign of Jonah was that:

~ Jonah was not dead in the belly of the fish,
~ he survived from a near-dead position as he prayed to G-d and
~ went to his Jewish people to whom he was sent by G-d and
~ gave the message of G-d to the Jewish people again and
~ they listened it and accepted the message.

If Jesus was to show Sign of Jonah, then Jesus must fulfill the above similarities.

If not, then it was not a sign for the adulterous Jews.

According to the Pauline Christianity, as they narrate the details of the event of Cross wrongly, this sign becomes doubtful. Not that Jesus did not show the sign, he did show it, but they interfere with it and make Jesus an untruthful person. Right, please?

Jesus, the reality of the Pascal Lamb was Killed between the two evenings that preceded the 15th day of the first month, whereas the Pascal Lambs were supposed to be killed between the two evenings that preceded the 14th day of the first month, and the Lamb was to be eaten in the evening and beginning of the 14th day.

Exodus 12: 6; English translation: “Then on the evening of the 14th etc.

The Hebrew” Exodus 12: 6; -beyn haarbayim, "between the two evenings."

The Jews divided the day into morning and evening: Up until mid-day, all was morning or fore-noon; after that, all was afternoon or evening. Their first evening began just after twelve o'clock, as the sun began its descent toward the horizon and continued till sunset; their second evening began at sunset and continued till night, i.e., during the whole time of twilight; between twelve o'clock, and the termination of twilight, when the Passover was to be offered.

The Lambs originally were killed between Mid-day and sunset of the thirteenth day of Nisan, [Jesus died at 3 PM, midway between 12 and 6 PM.] the lambs were supposed to be eaten in the evening of the 14th day of Nisan which was the beginning of the 24 hour day of Passover, which finished at sunset which was the beginning of the 15th day of Nisan, the first day of the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread, which followed the 24 hour day of Passover, of which day the Lord says in Exodus 12: 14; “You must celebrate ‘THIS DAY’ as a religious festival to remind you of what I, the Lord have done, Celebrate it (One day) for all time to come.

The Passover was to be eaten in the evening and beginning of the 14th day of the first month, when the sunset of the 14th day, the 15th day of the first month, which is the first day of the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread began and it was on the first of the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread , the evening and beginning of the 15th day of Nisan, that the Jews ate their Passover Lamb..

Not sure I understand. Where was Jesus for the three days and three nights? He said the heart of the earth. Isn't that the tomb? Please give your ideas.

Just wondering if you have heard an idea I saw months ago. The Sabbath associated with Passover can be on any day of the week, unlike the weekly Sabbath which is always on Saturday. If the Passover Sabbath was not on Saturday then maybe Jesus did not die on Friday. If it was earlier in the week then there was time for three full days and nights not just parts of three days and nights. Have you heard anything like this and what are your thoughts.

The day of Passover can fall on any weekly day in the month of Nisan.

To begin with, Jesus believed that the story of Jonah being swallowed by a big fish, was true, and the Book of Jonah does state that Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. See Jonah 1: 17.

But can we believe that a man could survive within a big fish for three days? In 1933 a sulfur bottom whale was caught off the coast of cape cod it was 100 ft long and had a mouth over 10 foot wide. A man who was unfortunate enough to be swallowed could take refuge in any one of the whales stomach chambers, or the large cranial cavities (extensions of the nasal sinus) which measure 7 feet high, 7ft wide and 14 ft long. More than big enough for a man to hide safely inside.

So all who believe that the scriptures are the inspired word of God, must believe that Jesus was dead for three days and three nights. It is supposed that Jesus was risen sometime in the darkness of Sunday morning, which was not a complete 24 hour day, but was one of the three nights in which his body was dead. He was alive for all the 12 hours of daylight on Sunday, when he appeared to Cleopas and his son Simon.

This leave us another three periods of Light and two periods of Darkness. two of the 24 hour days would have been the previous 12 hours of Saturday, that followed the 12 hours of Saturday night, which was the normal weekly Sabbath that followed the Most high Sabbath of 12 hours of daylight, on Friday that had followed the 12 hours of Darkness of Friday night.

We now have our three periods of Darkness or three nights, But only two periods of daylight, which leaves us with a period of Light on the Thursday, the day in which Jesus died at 3 PM, immediately after the three hour period of Darkness from Midday until 3 Pm was lifted from the city of Jerusalem.

He died between the two evenings of Midday and 6 PM.

What was it that stood between the sun and the city of Jerusalem, causing the city to remain in its shadow of darkness for three hours?

So you are saying Jesus died on Thursday and not Friday as most people believe. I have never heard this idea before. Please tell me any more details you have and why no one else has thought of this.

The gospel of John has the Twelve observing Passover on the "preparation day" for Pesach, thus the evening before the official day begins at sundown. Many believe this is more likely since the Sanhedrin could not meet as a body on Pesach, so if an emergency decision had to be made, one judge would make it and then after the holiday is over they could take it under full review by all.

I will ask the same question mentioned a few posts back. Is there any chance the Sabbath associated with Passover was any other day of the week? Almost everyone believes it was Saturday. But the Passover Sabbath could be a different day. Just like Christmas can be any day of the week. Is there something people are missing? Are they making up excuses to squeeze thre days and nights in between Friday sunset and Sunday sunrise? If the Sabbath for Passover was around Thursday it would allow plenty of time for the three days and nights. Is there any solid evidence for or against this possibility?

No, as the Sabbath always starts on Friday evening sundown, regardless of any holiday.

So, if Jesus was crucified prior to the beginning of the Sabbath, this would have to be on Friday during the day if he was on the cross for only a few hours prior to the start of Shabbat. Therefore, if John is right, Jesus and the Twelve celebrated the "preparation day" of Pesach on Thursday prior to sundown.

Therefore, if Jesus was in the tomb prior to sundown Friday, he was in the tomb for two days (Friday and Saturday) and rose on the third day, Sunday.

I was told that there are two different kinds of Sabbaths. One occurs every weel on Saturday. The other is related to certain holy days that the Jews observe and can fall on other days of the week. One of these annual Sabbaths is related to the Passover. Please see if you can find any information about annual Sabbaths ans if they can occur on any week day.

There are some Jewish holidays that are also days of rest, such as Yom Kippur, but these do not negate the regular Shabbat observance.
